i can live with the AF as i rarely used it. i might not have ever used it... can't quite remember.
as a matter of reference i could live with everything else about both the g10 and s90. having a peek at tic's flickr page i reckon either will be suitable.

please don't take this anything less than genuine curiosity but what techniques are you using to overcome what i find to be maddening lag?
i spent a greta deal of time working with a g10 and no mater what i did it still was a little slow to respond. i also spent 2 days mucking with an s90 and same story.
Maybe I'm not noticing it because I'm trying to take more non-portrait photographs. 99% of my work is kids and people stuff with a dslr. I wanted a pocket camera to have with me all the time, hence the S90. As I think about it more, most of my shots with the S90 have been urban landscape stuff. I will take more notice of what I am or am not doing with the S90 in the coming days and report back.
Sorry to come across so surely about my position, did not mean to mislead.

all good my friend. if you had some inside mojo that could overcome it i would be out buying one tomorrow (s90). the shutter lag isn't a deal breaker for everyone as they have different needs. it just bugged me that canon can't seem to come up with a "snap mode" a la' Ricoh.

Well, I did it. I traded in my G10 yesterday and got the S90. So far I am happy. I do miss the "feel" of the G10, but the controls on the S90 are nice and the smaller size will keep it in my pocket (rather than at home) most of the time. I could have gotten more for the G10 on eBay, but this was an easy way to do it. I am feeling a little bit sentimental though, maybe I'll buy a used G10 in a year or two when prices have dropped further... That's the collector in me speaking, I'm not used to selling old things when getting new ones...

i used the g10 at 28mm 99.9% of the time and couldn't overcome the lag.
manual focus (preset distance), and manual exposure at the widest focal length on both and still lag. OK for some folks i suppose but not for what i need it to do. bugs me really as they are great cameras and the size of the s90 really is a plus.
emraphoto; try turning off the Safety MF. This helps quite a bit, and may significantly reduce your lag with your current settings (widest focal, pre-set focus, etc). I also turn off the LCD, use the optical viewfinder, and assign it all to a custom function (C2) that I use for fast candid shots, shooting from the hip, etc.
Its not eliminated, but I found the Safety MF to make a big difference.

There's a useful article about manual focusing the S90 at:

In fact, you can save a setting (zoom, focus distance etc) in Custom mode and return to it whenever you like. I use it as a P&S setting and it's fast.
