Show me a nice old car

I'd like to see more shots of that M-B. It looks great.

That color reminds me of the glossy gray I see on some other new vehicles; Jeep Wranglers come to mind immediately but I am sure there are others. An unusual color but it sure stands out from the typical black that is on so many other cars, at least around here.

All good harmless fun until you buy one...

Regards, David

I know, I know, but I am thinking about getting another. After the Austin Seven (and I don't know how many others before it) the next target is an early Jag XJ6 or 420 (not 420G). I'll need to sell some Leicas but they have become cupboard stuffing of late.

Honest, it will be my last...maybe.

I've never really got round to doing a full photoshoot of her, but a few more. I took months to decide upon the colour but the original white with a hint of grey was horrible. Arabergrau is a 60s colour and I felt it worked well with the interior and just looked period. Now, some 3 years on, flat colours are everywhere.

The car belonged to my neighbour and it was in a terrible state, propping up his model railway. He meant as a retired mechanic to restore it but after 25 years and failing health simply wanted someone to take her on. The most expensive car I've ever been given for nothing! Almost there now, a few bits of tuning and some trim but the rest is sorted. The paint is stunning - it was finished with McClaren carbon fibre lacquer so shines bright.

Looks great, Charles! Congrats on the fine outcome of what I'm sure was a huge effort. I've fully restored only one in my time and that was enough. :)

Lovely Mercedes, Charles! From the double front bumper, it looks like a 250, right?

I was a big Mercedes fan back in the '60s, and the /8 series, including your coupe, was especially fine.

Wow, if that runs half as good as it looks it must be a real pleasure to drive.
Good choice on the color too as it looks great with that interior color.
Thanks for sharing the pictures with us.

With inspiration from Charles' lovely restoration, here's another Mercedes-Benz. Not mine, and not in restored condition, but just a few years older than Charles' W114.

Mercedes-Benz 230 W110.011 - Second series (1965–1968).

Lovely Heckflosse!

Mine drives very well now - a rare 5 speed manual helps - but I've lowered her a little and fitted uprated shocks. As a result she goes where you point her in real time, rather than body following steering wheel with a seconds delay. I converted her to modern fuel injection so there's been a steep learning curve for tuning and mapping. She's the first I set out to restore, at least I knew it at the start rather than discovering with my 1949 Allard that the "restored" car needing everything renewing.

Thanks all for positive comments, I spent 2 years of my life on her and she'll be getting a lot more use when I move house, hopefully later this year. The heavily congested South East of England is no fun in an old car without electric windows or aircon!

Her name is Brunhilde (I'm heavily into Wagner and felt that as I'd rescued her from 25 years sleeping, and I'd love to sing Siegfried, that was the only possible name). Here she is with young Billy, a great friend and an immensely talented mechanic who is helping me with the tuning, and his wonderful, super bright girlfriend Molly - in this case the car is not the star!

Indeed - 250CE. My first ride ever was in a 1975 /8 280e, driven by a mad German. At 11 I'd never been in an airconditioned car before, or one with leather, and he hit 130mph on the Ostia autostrada. So I love having a W114 now!

Charles, I envy you that one! Enjoy it all you can. :)

My uncle and aunt's 1955 Kombi on front left at a camp (I think) in Germany in 1958 on Kodachrome film. Photo by my uncle or aunt. I was there but only 6 at the time.
