I'm looking at the Leica code VISOR viewfinder (3.5cm-5cm-13.5cm) to use on my Standard with a 3.5cm Elmar.

I was wondering if you could post a photo of yours Erik? (Assuming you catch this) and tell me a little about the finder, how well it works, and possibly some issues to look out for? These are extremely expensive compared to the later VIOOH but I really want the set as close to period correct as I can afford ;)

Let's talk VISOR guys!

Hm, a 23rd/24th century space shuttle may have been an inspiration? ;)

Thanks!

I figure it would be the most appropriate match for my 3.5cm Elmar on the Standard I recently purchased. I've found one in Bargain condition to match even ;)

David, I know that's my only hesitation.

I've found a RASAL for a similar price and feel it would be more practical...

Maybe I just need both!

maybe you do, who knows? And there's the VIOOH as well as the Contax version and the USSR made version of it and the Helios Japanese one...

Regards, David

The allure is purely matching an accessory to fill that empty shoe ;)

cheap fun so far... haha

The VISOR radi(c)al cam shows us is the earliest version, with the partly knurled knob at the rear. Mine is the same, but sligtly later, with the knob fully knurled. With this knob you can choose a vertical or a horizontal view.

They were made for the first Leicas with interchangeable lenses. They give, like the VIDOM, a mirror image and show black frames for 35mm, 50mm and 135mm lenses. Later there were quite a lot of variants with different framelines for different lenses, but these finders were all killed off by the VIDOM. The VIDOM was a true universal viewfinder that also provided parallax-correction.

It is a nice finder on the Leica I interchangeable with a 35mm Elmar mounted. This Elmar does not need a rangefinder as it generates enough dept of field. The finder mounts really low, so there is not much parallax.

Leica II, Elmar 35mm f/3.5, VISOR, Tmax400.

Erik.

On the topic of viewfinders look out for ones marked 'Swallow', later 'Accura'.

Very good and very well made, not 'universal' but in my limited experience universal viewfinders are rarely as good as ones built for a specific length.
