Here's another unusual one. In the 70's, Kiev had one more shot at modernizing the old prewar Contax, and they came up with the Kiev 5. While the 4's and 4a's of the time were, to be charitable, not of the highest quality, they pulled out all the stops and built a tank here. I had the top off this yesterday, and the wind mechanism parts are about three times as robust as they need to be. Possibly recycled military vehicle parts. As well as taking pictures, handling this camera is good aerobic exercise. It has an extremely good combined VF/RF with coverage for 35, 50 and 85mm, and framelines for 50 and 85, as well as parallax compensation. Everything is working fine.

Man... I really wish they made a Kiev with an LTM mount... I love the look and solid feel of them, but I can't get used to the "Contax Grip" and I HATE the infinity lock on them.

For Nagl:

This is the old FED 50mm f2.0 lens, which I think was only supplied with the FED-S. It was one of three prewar lenses that were not resurrected after the war. Besides the 50 f2.0, there was a 100 f6.3 which I have, and a 28 f something, which I am looking for. The 50 is thought to be a Summar copy, but the lens extends a lot farther forward that does the Summar, so I have my doubts.
A great lens for people who really dislike contrast.

I have two of these beasts, which is one more than I need. If you are interested, the one pictured is for sale, with a J8 or I61 lens.

Also if anyone is tempted by the Kiev 5, I just saw one on ebay. I have bought a few things from this vendor, and always been happy with my purchases.

Heres mine, my first and only (but watch this space) rangefinder, was lucky enough to be given it ealier this week, it very nearly got junked by its previous owner!!!
Was a close one but now its safe!!:)

Very nice indeed. The ones with "Zorki" in script Roman letters are rather scarce. Does this one also have the engraved logo and dials instead of the painted ones? A really good find if that is the case.

Thanks Dez, yes all the writing including the logo on the camera is engraved.
It even came in its original leather case.
I didnt realise that this was an unusual version.

And Im certainly enjoying using it!

Well I have joined the club have one nice FED-2 with Industar-26m 50mm F-2.8 lens both camera and lens are very nice ,just owner needs to get use to a real rangefinder thats all, I have other rangefinders but this is differnet in my mind , and only way I can get to have a real Leica camera

I sold one of my home serviced butter smooth Zorki-1d to a classmate from Tajikistan. She bought it as a gift to her father. She said he was VERY glad to receive it(probably an item he longed for as a youth), but unfortunately the camera would be on the shelf more than it would be in-action.

I recently assembled another Zorki-1 for myself:

Body:

Zorki-1d chassis + Zorki-1c “Bilingual” top plate and vulcanized shell with lens mount.


I bought a beat-up Bilingual Zorki-1c earlier this year. I like the Bilingual Zorki-Zorki engraving, but have not found that the Bilingual version has better build quality than normal versions. Additionally, Zorki-1c's bump-shaped vulcanite covering looks much better than the ones on later Zorki-1d and 1e, to me. So I replaced the top plate and the shell on my Zorki-1d, which has serviced shutter already.





Lens:
KMZ Industar-50 lens block and base + Industar-22 “Moskva” faceplate.

A known problem with Industar-22 and 50 is that many samples tend to give a circle/round ghosting flare when the sun or even overcast sky is above you. I still haven't figured out the cause of such flare, my guess is that the flare is caused by some internal reflection on the areas between the lens groups. The Industar-50 I have is a sample with minimal flare issue among other copies. I do like the "Moskva" name plate on pre-1950 Industar-22 (uncoated flare-kings), so I just replaced the name plate on my I-50 with it.

At last I added an “Elmar 5cm” lens hood to it. (Made in capitalist China, totally tainted the combo!)
