A 1951 made Zeiss Ikon Contax S, "small d" version. One of the first pentaprism SLR in the World.

Sadly it's shutter curtains don't work properly (although the shutter itself does work). I supose I would have to change them, or more specifically, find someone with the spertise to do it, as I don't dare to:(.

there's something appealing in the design of those early Contax S/D/Pentacon SLRs! but I guess they are troublesome to use and unreliable (never had one myself). wish its re-done as kickstarter project one day, with modern controls and materials.

An Exakta VX IIa produced in 1958-1960. As with most of GDR (DDR) cameras exported into the USA in this period, it's clearly marked as "GERMANY USSR OCCUPIED". The pentaprism head looks more modern than the usual models fitted to the VX IIa's

I've had Nikons, a huge number of Pentax K-mount types, and random others, but through it all I had never tried any of the original S line of true "Pentax" cameras. On a whim a couple of weeks ago I picked up a rather beat up and dirty H3v (SV) for a song. Cleaned it up for well over 2 hours (I wish I'd taken a "before" photo) and now it's purring happily (except for the 1/1 thru 1/8 speeds which will need an adjustment but for now it's fine to not use them).
The moral here is that shooting with this thing must be the most sublime feeling I've ever gotten from any SLR, perhaps any camera... In two short weeks this thing has become, without a doubt, one of my favorite cameras, period. Easily in the top-3. I only wish I'd tried one sooner. :)

My last Ihagee, an Exakta VX from 1955-56 sold to the US (it's a VX, not a Varex).

An interesting and tender detail about this camera bought online is that there's the name of a former owner. Maybe the only one, maybe one of several owners. I love this detail
