I have a few SLRs, but most are seldom used... This is my Nikkormat FT with 35/2. I also have a 105/2.5

Yes, I had an EF early on, I liked it then, and still do. This is my second EF I've owned. I just got it a few months ago with a 50/1.4 SCC BL. But I bought a 28/2.8 SC BL too. I love the 28. My Street style is "Sneaky" too. I cover the Pentaprism with my left hand, and rest my right hand over the release. I put the lens on Manual F/stop and use the Hyper-focal scale for P/S ease. I use the meter as a guide for the F/stop.

All I have to do is get within 6 feet or so and turn my body in the direction of the person (s), the 28mm will cover a full length plus some area. I tried it out today, I'll see how it worked out when I get it processed. Plus even though it is an SLR, Outside it is silent to the people I am taking a candid picture of.

I am considering an "A-1" or "F-1n" but am concerned about the shutter on a used "A-1"/EBay deal. 🙁

Oh, gosh, all this Canon EF talk...

I bought an EF body not a year after it was released, to accompany my F-1. Other than my being less than thrilled with its lack of coupled manual-metering mode (which I made up for by setting up my F-1 with – get this – its optional Servo-EE Finder and Motor Drive MF...and one heavy MF that combo was 🙄), I loved it. Just try and tell me that Canon didn't buy a Leica M5, tear it apart, and appropriate the more-obvious bits for the EF. The EF was even more fun when shooting flash with Canon's C.A.T. distance-based setup, something I would encounter years later, in a slightly techier version, with Konica's Hexar autofocus.

As far as adding an A-1 to your setup goes, I'd pass if I were you. I was stupid enough to trade away my EF for an A-1 when it first came out. Ouch. Ended up trading it off for a second F-1 body. My example ate batteries alive, and had a noisy geartrain that I was afraid to lash an MA Motor Drive to. (Canon tried to fix it, but concluded it wasn't a "problem", save for the noise. Didn't cut much ice to me.) I'd go straight to a T-90: more refined, and you get proper metered-manual mode. Think of it as coming as close as possible to an EOS body with an FD lens mount...which is more-or-less what it is. 🙂)

Gotta stop these SLR flashbacks....

Since my F's and F2's are already here somewhere.... just present my F3/T😱 with the everyday lens... just love the "colors".. the 45 turns the F3 on a great street camera.🙂

Eye of the beholder thing, I guess, as I love the sleek look and the ergonomics are superb.

Arbib, I'd also suggest a T-90 as well. The metering on it is a joy to use even in the messiest street light situations. It just works.

The T90 is the main reason why I have not left SLR photography. It is a camera with great possibilities for creativity. The metering system is second to none. I paid readily to repair the EEE problem when it occured.

Barrett, I agree that the A-1 is a noisy camera. I too traded my first EF for the A1 when it came out and regretted it! However, after the plastic (one of Canon's firsts to NOT be proud of) AE-1, you must agree that the metal bodied A-1 was a beautiful AND very sophisticated camera.
Before it could develop the infamous squeek I had to hand my A-1 over to the insurance company after the Tokina zoom lens didn't want to come off. Canon's repair facility couldn't fix it and offered to saw the lens off! I got a nice refund which helped to get me my first EOS, the "10". Ugly as the T90 (I never liked those Colani designs), but an excellent camera nevertheless.
A few years ago, with FD cameras going for peanuts on evil bay, I bought mint copies back of all the SLRs I had possessed. My "new" A-1 has the squeek, but it still performs nicely!

BTW, There's a T90 and an F1-New waiting for me and I'm still searching for a nice FTb (black) and a first version F1... And then, an OM1/2 and perhaps some Nikons....

The Unirex was my first SLR.Carried it all over Viet Nam until it was stolen.Took some great photos with it.So easy to use.Replaced it with a Spotmatic F .Just got it back from my son,photography does'nt interest him..........Robin

Ok, I confess. I use SLR cameras.

I own some Leica R gear, but have a real soft spot for the Nikon F3.

I have two F3-Pro with MD-4 motordrives, that get a lot of use.
This is the heavy duty press model with the titanium prism, extra weather sealing and a few other modifications. http://cameraquest.com/nff3p.htm

IMO this may be the best semi-manual SLR ever made, before the computers in a box like the EOS series and F5 took over.

The F3 is nearly indestructible, blazing fast in operation, extremely expandable and a joy to shoot. It just feels right and while the Leica viewfinders are brighter, the high eye-point finder on the Nikon is as big as a porthole.

The downside is that while the Nikon glass is very good, it's just not as good as the Leica-R optics. But the Nikkor glass does have a lot of character and a gazillion famous photos have been taken with them. Content trumps all. The 2.5/105 and H.C. 2/50 are something special.

I use them with the Nikkor H.C. 2/50, 2/35, 2.5/105-P and the new Zeiss 1.4/50 Planar. Some day down the road I may pick up the Zeiss 2/35.
