Shutter issue on Kiev

Hi,
not exactly a shutter issue, rather a cocking issue. My Kiev that seemed to work well, suddently started not to wind worrectly. I can't lock the speeds anymore, and the film advance doens't work. I think there's something off inside the coking mechanism, (i know I'm very clever) but what? Has somebody ever got this trouble? And how can you fix it?

Check if the shutter curtains close when you cock - the ribbons could be broken. Also, there is a spring retainer at back-right part of winding mechanism, if it disengages from the base the speeds can skip on winding.

I gather from your post that when you turn the winding knob to wind the film and cock the shutter, it does not stay cocked? Or does the knob move at all?

One of my Kiev's does that occasionally. The shutter release button on a Kiev 4 has two functions. When you press it down, it first releases the shutter and then releases the the double exposure preventer. On my Kiev, if I do not hold the shutter release down for a short while after the shutter fires, the double exposure preventer does not release and the film will not wind to the next frame.

If that happens, the double-exposure preventer can be released by removing the top of winding knob and taking off the shutter setting dial. You will then see a wheel with irregularly spaced indentations. Once the top is off, the shutter can be cocked and released using a small bladed screwdriver or even your fingers. Be careful not to gouge the soft brass parts.

Once it has been released, reassemble the knob. It's easiest to reassembel with the shutter in a cocked position so you can align the shutter speed knob properly.

To prevent it from happenng again. be sure and press on the CENTER of the shutter release button and hold it until you FEEL a very slight secondary "click" under your finger. Then you can release the button.

I think it is just a lubrication/adjustment problem that a good repeir person can fix.

The simplest problem is that you are not pushing down the button far enough.

The next simplest problem is the button can be rotated into the 'T' position accidently & it will lock down.

The next simplest problem is that the logic under the winding know is stuck from the Ru grease, grease has a limited like, before it turns to glue, a few i.e. three or fewer drops or PTFE liquid lube might avoid a dissembly.

Otherwise it is buy watchmakers screw driver, deep tray, pressure sensitive tape and strip off the top plate apply zippo fludi with a brush and PTFE liquid.

There is a help site, but it may take you 7 hours the first time...

hello all,
obviously I hadn't expose my problem well. I meant that, when I selected a shutter speed, the speed selector kept moving instead of locking. But I found out what the problem was : for those who have already opened a Kiev, there's a kind of metal piece that prevents the selector from moving once the speed is engaged. It's quite difficult to explain in english sorry...
So by dismentling the winding knob, I found out that this part was broken. Two solutions came to my mind : ask for a replacement part; or have it fixed.
I went to the geneva flee market, and met there a guy I talk of this broken part with. "I've got an old Kiev IIIa for part, if you're interested" he said "come next wednesday!"
I was saved!!!

Hello Stéphane,
Do you know a repairman in Paris who could CLA Kiev cameras? I've got a problem on the shutter of my Kiev 4am, not bad, I think a CLA would be the solution. I know Leica repairmen, but I don't think they would accept to fix a Kiev. My only other solution is to send the camera to Oleg ... but it takes a long time.

je ne connais malheureusement pas de réparateur de Kiev à Paris. Essaie Photo-Suffren mais je ne te garantie rien.
Fortunetely, (it's quite a miracle as a matter of fact), I found out how to fix the problem :
I went to the Geneva flee-market, and met there a classic camera dealer. I had a talk with him, and he told me that he had a Kiev IIIa for part, if I was interested. tada!
