I have had my RD-1 for about a year and love using this wonderful camera. I do have a problem recently though. The shutter release button sometimes does not work. If I turn the camera off and then on again all is well again. I have not noticed any other problem with my RD-1 and wondered if anyone else is having this problem.
I shoot primarily in raw and know that the turnaround time is longer than shooting jpeg's but my camera does not recover unless I restart it.
Has anyone else noticed this happening to their RD-1???
By the way, I have 3 lenses-28,35 and 50mm Leica.
Thanks. Edie:)

I've not had the problem, but there is a "shutter release problem" solved in the resent r-d1s firmware update. I suggest giveing it a try.

I have similar problems when using non-Epson batteries. They seem still more than 25% full but the R-D1 doesn't like them anymore. If I shoot too fast, the shutter gets stuck.

Almost certainly it is the 'dreaded' shutter hibernation problem with the R-D1. If left on it goes to 'sleep' and you have to hit it twice or turn off then on to wake it up. If you update it to the R-D1s by downloading the firmware from the Epson website it will fix it. It is a marked improvement to do this.
It is a great camera

This is a post that I think people should take note of. If that's what is happening with lower mAh batteries, I would suspect that shutter damage is possible. I stick with stock Epson batteries and, only if I must, use alternates that are 3.7 volt, 1500mAh. The possible correlation between shutter problems and alternate batteries has come up several times on the forum.

This is very interesting, i have just bought an RD1S brand new, and today i have just sent it back to Robert White due to this very problem.

The sutter went to sleep and to get it going again the camera needed a slap on the body. but it would not be long before it happend again.

But with mine being an RD1s has the firmware update sorted this issue? it would appear not.

Stuart.

Sean, I have only used Epson batteries. I love the camera and photos I get but this is a nuisance. I downloaded the firmare update but it will not open on my iMac. I have Stuffit Expander 10.01 and that should be sufficient. what do you think? Edie

I don't think it's compressed. Take a look at the PDF instructions that came in the download.

Cheers,

Sean

It's but a zip file that should be easy to decompress indeed.
No problem on my Macs and Stuffit Expander but i use OS 9 though.

I downloaded the latest firmware and still have the problem. It's really annoying and I lost several potential pictures this weekend! Apart from that and the lack of 75mm framelines, it's a great camera.

:) :) :) Thank all of you for your help. But, I finally did what my son always says"Mom. read the instructions"! The PDF file clearly tells you how to upgrade the firmware into your camera. When followed it works perfectly- NO decompression necessary..Now hope the fix works when I take my R-D1 out later today.

I need to say to all the naysayers that this is the best camera I have had in years. This fix was the only glitch I found and that was not a major thing.

I am a rangefinder nut (have 2 Mamiya MF-6's(film) and LOVE them. I just wish that the format of the photos were closer to the square format I love.
