Hi,

I'm new to the world of rangefinders. I'd like a quiet and discrete camera, mainly for street photography and indoor candids (library, hospitals, etc...). So, shutter sound is a concern.

I'm looking for something quieter than the 10D. I don't really know the standards in the rangefinder world, but I played a bit with a Yashica EE, that was quiet! I've been told that the Bessa R was not really quiet...

So anyway, my question is, which rangefinder is very quiet in the Leica M mount or screwmount.

I think we had a very similar thread a week or so ago .... my Zeiss super Ikonta is my quietest ... but in the real world ... M7! 🙂

In the M-mount, the M3, M2, M4, M6, M7, MP and whatever other Leica M exists are all very quiet. All of the Leica and Canon screwmounts are pretty quiet as well.

I don't own one anymore, but the Bessas, while not as quiet, were not obtrusively loud. Then again, my standard for loud is probably the old Copal Square SLRs where people would hit the ground after hearing the shutter trip.

You have a lot of choices. Most all current RF's will be significantly quieter than a dslr. Even the bessas'--they are the most affordable new. The new Zeiss Ikon's tops my list, and if you have a soul (or first born) to sell, an MP's the Holy Grail. Have fun--There are a lot of great resources here.
