First no friction and next a loose dial with the top plate falling off. Since I don't know how to properly align the dial, I guess that it needs to go back.

FYI: Make sure that the top plate on the dial is tight and secure.

Where do I send this thing? Zeiss websites are rather vague in that the Ikon site has form only for lenses.

No, it must have been a Leica. EVERYONE KNOWS that it's only Leicas that ever have manufacturing defects from new.

Seriously, sorry to hear about the problem. In most jurisdictions, the vendor (the dealer from whom you bought the camera) is the first recourse.

Cheers,

R.

This happened to one of my ZI bodies as well. It actually is quite a simple repair. The assembly sequence is quite intuitive once you study it.

If you have small screwdrivers, I suggest it give it a try before you send it off.

I also suggest you check with your local full time pro photographers about local repairmen. They are everywhere but stay hidden so they do not have to deal with the general public.

Bob, the dial is intact but loose. It turns freely. If you can tell me how you made sure that the numbers (EI and shutter speeds) were aligned properly, I would give the repair a try. It is only the alignment that has me concerned.

OK.. after one of the tiny washers shooting five feet, I have it back together and the meter is agreeing with my other Ikon.

I have learned my lesson. Mechanical things need frequent attention.. .tighten everything.

Actually, I did not fix my own. Mine came loose while I was in BFE, 250 miles from home, and I had no tools at all. When I could not reach my friendly local camera repair guy I called my friendly used camera dealer at home. He referred me to a little local camera repair shop 100 miles from where I was but in the direction I was going. That guy had never seen a Zeiss Ikon but said it was simple and fixed it in minutes. Upon returning home, my local camera repair guy confirmed that I could have fixed it myself. And this is the guy who tells me to not clean a lens but bring it to him. He does everything while I wait, usually at no charge.

Thanks for the link. I put it in my address book. I think that I'm good to go. My only concern is if this will be a constant problem. I haven't even taking this camera on an plane. It should be better behaved than this.
