According to mirrorless lessons website, update fixes issues w/ color accuracy. The sample of the red flower show less punchy, more subtle color..

I wonder what kinds of changes to the sensor calibration/capture differ from previous firmware versions.

I suspecting improvement in the Bayer like algo myself and tune down of the contrast aspects. I hope they improve the awb.

The reason I ask is because I wonder how much of that is baked in before the raw file is created, and what exactly is unchangeable once the file is created. The calibration has to be pretty close to the hardware (otherwise only spp would be seeing changes to the processing algorithm, right?).

They did say that SPP needed to be upgrade.. So something in the change requires SPP update. Since the raw file is suppose to leave the pixel info unchanged (unbaked), I always presumed that the Bayer like algo was only done on the in camera jpg. SPP has to interpret the Bayer like info itself.
U could be right, maybe they used to interpret the algo in camera and wrote to raw w/ the info. Maybe the new version turns off the hw algo assist to raw and allows a more powerful SPP to handle it..

That makes sense that the firmware is necessary to correct for JPEG engine. I'll have to do some tests with old X3F files that have quirky red channel rendering, see if the new SPP corrects things as seen in the samples.
