The news is just hitting that the DP2 and DP3 will be released later in 2008. I for one will not be holding my breath since I have now waited for 2 years for the DP1 from the time I first learned of it but it does make a great source of speculation for me.

How about a faster 50mm equivalent lens, like a 50 2.8 or 2.0? Dare I? 1.0?

I will not be holding my breath but Sigma has me done again watching what will happen next, fantasizing, maybe they are a covertly a French company that believes desire surpasses feel, fire trumps water in rock-paper-scissors, or they are just sending up smoke signals but who knows? If nothing else they certainly are not a bore, compliments to Michihiro Yamaki.

According to the AP Informer, Sigma plans a DP2 and DP3 non-DSLR camera, and one of them might have a zoom lens, and the other a focal length that is complimentary to the DP1. Or something like that. If you are in the UK, run to your local news stand or bookstore and grab the AP issue with the Informer magazine! :)

In an article in last week’s UK-based Amateur Photographer magazine, Sigma’s founder Michihiro Yamaki revealed that not one but two new Sigma compact cameras will be unveiled by the end of 2008. No concrete details were revealed about the possible specification.

If the 28 is an f4, what would a zoom be?

Probably the same. I suspect they limited the 28mm to f/4 for quality reasons - of the image, not the lens. They can obviously make faster high-quality lenses. So I would guess (just a guess) that any zoom lens would be about the usual f/4~f/5.6 that we typically see.

sigma to the fire, somebody,.. get the can of gas.....!

(to think they don't know that photography can't be done at anything smaller than f4.... ,-)

Unveiled? Maybe yes.

But in production? I've got to see the DP1 first in the stores before I believe that..

Sigma bores me. This camera was doomed the moment it was conceived. I would take an Oly 4/3 thing, you know, one of those really small ones, with one of their primes which would be a hell of a lot faster, then I would have a little bigger package but infinitely easier to use and cheaper. That said I dont like oly cameras and would rather have a proper camera.

The DP1 is significantly smaller than a E420 + pancake lens!

You shouldn't be comparing these two cameras, in fact.
I see no reason not to compare these two cameras..

The pictures on dpreview show what is possibly the smallest dslr/lens combination available now versus the only large sensor compact there is. The size difference is there, but oh dear, is that gap small! Especially considering what the Oly/pancake has to offer that the DP1 doesn't (optical finder, faster lens, and comfortable grip)..

In terms of "pocketability" the differences in size, volume and weight are significant enough for me.
