Sigma DP2 Merrill scan slides?

I am planning to scan parts of my father's collection of Kodachromes from the 1960s. I was hoping to use my Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400 for this project, but the scanner has broken down. My other option is to use my Epson V750. I am very satisfied with the results I am getting from the Epson with medium format film, but I have not done much scanning of 35mm yet. Probably the Epson will produce good enough scans of the Kodachrome slides.

I have also started to think about the possibility of using my Sigma DP2 Merrill together with the AML-2 close-up lens as a "scanner". But before I go ahead and purchase the close-up lens, I would like to learn more about other people's experience with Sigma DP2 Merrill and scanning. Is this a good idea, or should I just use the Epson v750?

I am grateful for any advice on this matter!

Regards
Bjørn

I have no experience with either the DP2 or the v750, but I think you'll be happier with the scanner. The big difficulty with the camera is getting the camera and the slide perfectly aligned, centered, and not rotated. The scanner and its film holder will do that for you.

Maybe this particular camera/lens combination is better, but aux close up lenses are *usually* not the best choice for high magnification (like slide copying) of flat objects.

I think slide "scanning" *could* be done successfully with the old-school bellows, macro lens, and slide coppier/holder attachment on a digital camera...

Bjorn I have no experience using the Sigma as a scanner. However I have been scanning my 35mm with a Nikon D7000 for a while now. I recently started doing medium format as well. The results with 35mm are much much better compared to what I get with my Epson V700. The results with medium format are closer but again the Nikon is better if you pixel peep.

Nearly all the 35mm work on my site have been scanned by the Nikon. I have also printed these up to 16x20 and have been happy with the results.

I say go for it and let us know the results.

This is what I do

Absolutely no problems with film flatness since I tape the film using painters tape by the edges. I take 4 images per 35mm frame and 16 per 6x6 image. I then stitch the images in photoshop. You can be sloppy with the overlaps on 35mm but have to be a little careful with MF especially if you have large parts of sky in the shot.

Thank you both for interesting feedback!

I have a Pentax K5 and macro lenses that I also could use for "scanning". But since I purchased the DP2 Merrill this summer, I have been blown away by the resolution and colour reproduction of the Merrill foveon sensor. That is what got me thinking about finding a way to use the DP2M as a "scanner".

I believe that when scanning any document or film your best results occur when you are using a flat field lens. A scanner has one. Macro lenses typically produce a flat field but there may be some that do not. I couldn't tell you if the AML-2 results in a flat field or not.

If it does I am pretty sure you could use an old 35mm camera stand and slide copier to assist in doing what you want.

EDIT - I have also been impressed with the Sigma's files so if it works let us know.

I have been looking at close-up lenses from other brands, like for instance the B+W +10 close-up lens, which is cheaper that the Sigma AML-2.

Does anybody know how strong the AML-2 magnification is (+2, +4, +8) ?. Would a +10 close up lens be OK for 35mm slide scanning with the DP2 Merrill?
