I just got the latest edition of Rangefinder Magazine and saw that the Sigma DP2 is out. Has anyone seen or handled one? Any thoughts on this successor to the DP1?

/T

I'll believe it when I see it. :p IIRC, It took almost two years from announce to availability on the DP1, and the DP2 was announced late last year. I doubt it'll take that long for the DP2 to hit the market.

I love the idea of a high-quality fixed-lens digital point and shoot. But for the price of this type of camera, I'd really like to see faster lenses, quicker operating times, bigger sensors and better IQ. There seems to be one HQ compact out there, IF you could blend the best of the G10, the LX3, the GRD, and DP1/2.

Here's Sigma's dedicated DP2 hype site:

Wishful thinking,
I have a $500.00 deposit at my dealer waiting for
the DP2. When it's available, I'll have it.
Till then, The DP1 is just as sweet as can be.

I now have it sistered with the GX-200 and it's a
great pair....

From what I could read the DP2 has pretty much the same specs as the DP1, except it's 35mm-effective f/l is 42mm instead of 25. Anything other significant differences?

Yes, it is a new processing engine, supposed to be much faster than everything right up to an including the SD14 dSLR. I believe it is called 'TRUE II' and it will also be in the upcoming SD15.

I suspect both the DP2 and the SD15 will be along shortly. The remaining SD14's are being blown out for $349 at Cameta Camera and Amazon. I guess they have to clear shelves. I bought an SD14, could not resist at that price.

Supposedly it uses the new TrueII image processor, which is said to speed up the camera and offer better IQ

EDIT: bmattock beat me to it :D

Goodbye Panasonic G1, welcome Sigma DP2, and the saga of flavor-of-the-month digital camera continues...

That's great to hear. This line from the DPreview review that followed the Timing and Sizes section for the DP1 was a kicker for me:

The lab tests confirm what we experienced while out and about with the DP1. The camera can really test your patience, especially when shooting in RAW. If your photographic style requires speedy operation go away now and look somewhere else.

Not if the DP2 comes through on its promise, which I hope it does.

i don't get these kind of comments man? like gear and technological development suddenly became a detriment with digital cameras? when i was shooting film there was constant development and change to the status quo... it's a good thing. i applaud your "dedication" to all things film and salgado but jeeze man, focus (pardon the pun) on your developing and shooting and come back and teach, learn, help... instead of some how implying that we are all suckers or somehow undeserving of the moniker "photographer" because we use digital cameras.
a camera is a camera... it captures light. get it?

Not at all, as someone who was once caught in this circle of digital upgrade myself I just like to point out the pattern so people take notice.

I have a Nikon D200 and its a great digital SLR.

I heard in the 70s and 80s people never ever bought new Nikons and Canons when they released new models. They just used their K1000s and called it a day.

it's not how you come off though. i'm not trying to attack you, really. the comment comes off as condescending. quite frankly a lot of them do?
i am not being sarcastic when i say i appreciate the love and dedication to film... i am happy you have found your medium. that being said you can come across as highly dismissive of digital cameras and your credentials and portfolio/gallery don't back the air of authority?
all i am saying is ease up on the "film is real and digital ain't rhetoric" and maybe folks will be more open to learning some of things you discover on your "film journey".

My gallery is mostly digital photos. lol

Actually, I have reached a stage where I won't even discuss digital photography in a serious manner anymore.

The film vs digital battles have been fought here and film has won decisively... You're a little late to the fight and you're picking on the most fierce of film warriors so be warned and move along before you're hurt. :)

you are complete in missing the point, whether the gallery is digital or not...
i shot for a very, very long time on film and continued to pay my mortgage with film until about 4 years ago. i am fully aware of the capabilities of both mediums... i have so little interest in whatever "fight" you speak of it's incredible.
you are tragically closed minded my friend and in the end your photography will suffer.

Its not me that you're angry with, its your own "shadow", some repressed thoughts which is related to digital/film photos.

I won't even comment on your photos because I'm indifferent to your pasturing.

Back to the topic at hand, I'm looking forward to seeing whether Sigma can sort out the shortcomings of the DP1. If the responsiveness is brought up to a reasonable standard I think they'll have a winner.
