Given the zoom lens u ended up w/ that is already a steal.. The 17-50f2.8 sold separately is not cheap compared to the normal kit lens for that camera (18-200f3.5-6.3). I think if u don't like the 17-50, u should be able to resell it for a reasonable price.

To me Sigma in Europe is so much mo aggressive in their pricing...

Their market share in Europe must be even smaller than in the US. The pricing must be an attempt to expand that.

Made an interesting discovery about the Merrill and the rather flakey white balance. It seems to be associated with using the camera in the black and white setting ... switched it back to standard raw and the white balance performance seems much more reliable.

Normally I've been shooting it in monochrome and converting back to colour if needed ... I think I'll do it the other way around from now on.

W/ the sd1m I tend to use it as color camera...convert to b&w as well when I c something that works better in b&w, so I never noticed the issue. The dp I tend to use as a monochrom first.

Those were both shot at 8mm.
I did have the 17-50 with me, but the magic of the 8-16 was too enthralling.

Finally starting to bond with the camera ... initially I was a little disappointed but over the last few days I'm feeling feeling very comfortable with the camera. 🙂

And particularly the 35mm f1.4 ... what a brilliant lens!

As a total DSLR newbie, I'm in the teething phase. Or maybe IT's in the teething phase and I'm getting bit in both senses of the word 😀 My experience so far has been largely defined by this ain't no Henri's rangefinder!

Right now, the 8-16 is presenting itself as THE compelling reason to stick with this camera. A 35/1.4 would of course be icing on the cake.

It's been pouring rain here. No light to speak of.

Only thing left to do was to try out the 17-50 on a tripod at home.
Similar to the 8-16, this lens is best at the wider end of the focal range.
While it doesn't have extraordinary DOF, it is incredibly creamy, and plenty sharp.

Initial impressions are that the SD1 is better at monochrome ISO 3200 than any of the DP Merrills.

My dilemma now is do I keep this body in order to have the amazing 8-16 and sell the 17-50 in order to fund a 35/1.4? (The macro 105/2.8 on sale now is tempting to say the least, but that's really diving off the deep end!) I'm trying to think about how all that will play out for me in, say, 2-3 years down the road...😕

I am also eyeing the 105 macro. I sometimes want a bit more standoff then my 70 macro. It is also a newer design then the 70.

I doubt that there will be a dp Merrill any wider than a 21..

As you know, and as Keith's and others' photos have made abundantly clear, the Foveon Merrill sensor excels at B&W.

Clearly there is a trend in the camera world towards reinventing the whole apparatus of VIEW. To my mind, the innovations in this direction are ultimately more exciting than those in sensor technology.

The lack of live view on the SD1M is troubling. I really haven't yet decided whether or not I can live with this for the photography that I want to do with it. I just don't see any solution to the UWA problem that is more compelling (within the constraints I have) than the Sigma 8-16 paired with that Merrill sensor.

Since getting the SD1M, I've been tracking storms across borders. This has been the only light to speak of. (Heading for NYC, just in time for another storm!)

I love the way the Merrill sensor captures contrast color. No question of "authentic" colors, just beauty.

Love the rendering of that lens, and also love the pastel colours that Keith pulls out of the sensor. While I appreciate the Velvia-like brilliance of the foveon Merrill output, it actually excels at keeping muted colors muted in the same frame with brilliant colors.
