Silly Question, yet again :)

One of the joys of being broke is that it allows you to contemplate all kinds of silliness without having to worry about having to follow through any time soon... ;)

So, I'm sitting here rereading (yet again <LOL> ) Mr Gandy's excellent article on the M5 - http://www.cameraquest.com/m5.htm. The single thing I can think of that I don't like about it is the lack of 28mm frame lines. Could a .58 finder (with the MP condenser upgrade) be fitted to it _without_ loosing the match needles?

Just curious as it's gonna be a long while ... :D

Unfortunately yes. I saw one of those horrible mutants :D

I believe the M5 finder is unique. When it needs to be replaced, it is transplanted with a modern finder.

The one that I saw still had the speeds and match needle metering which is a different component and illuminated from the small window on top of the camera.

However, why would you want to deystroy the simple and accurate frame lines of the M5 (35/50/90).

Granted. I do dislike external finders and like the 28 lens. Is the orignional M5 finder able to give an acceptable aproximation of that FOV? If so, no problem and no finder-ectomy ... ;)

William

I use the 28mm lens on my M5 the same way I do on My M2 ... the area outside the 35 frameline is pretty close unless you're really fussy about it! :)

That's cool as the CL & Bessa R are much that way. No, I'm not too fussy. Get what you want centered & crop in the darkroom... ;)

Thanks,

William

Yes!

I have had more trouble loosing the edges in the minilab scanning process. The M5 viewfinder is fine for the 28mm FOV. I need to back up a bit to allow for the silly scanner.

Case in point. On the negative the right side of the table and Mr. Toad aren't cut off.

According to Don Goldberg, the non-flaring frameline fix (28-35-50-90) for the M5 is $190 installed. Money better spent on film or optics. YMMV.

Shouldn't be any need for the non-flare VF fix on an M5. You could add 28 and 75 frames, but the M5s all have finders that pre-date removal of the condenser lens in the finder part way through M4-2 production.

Roland,

I do. I do. I still loose a bit around the edges. Might be the operator or machine. I'll investigate.

DAG added the 28-35-50-90 framelines to my latest M5 before I bought it. Somehow the VF lost the condenser lens. Don quoted $190 to bring it up to current non-flare specs. I just got the body back from him. I haven't had time to use it in daylight to know if the finder really flares much.
