Well, no answers so far. I'll go onto the forum at silverfast and report back with what I learn.

Hi,
I tried pretty hard to work with Silverfast on 10.4 with a Minolta 5400II, but frequent crashes which required reboot, installation cleaning, the loss of all settings, made me give up on the whole thing. Silverfast support really tried to help, but it was no good. Now I'm happy with Vuescan on Linux, mostly in combination with a Coolscan V.

Good luck! Hans

I have been using Silverfast (AFL-SE) (vers. 6.5.5r5) for a while under Leopard without any problems. I have a Reflecta CrystalScan 7200. Before Leopard I used Windows XP and were having random crashes. Things work much better for me now.

In my experience device drivers for your Nikon scanner are probably the most likely source of problems.

Hope this helps.

Indeed it is likely that device drivers were the primary cause of the crash, perhaps in combination with OSX 10.4 failing to clear a hang on the USB bus, but what irked me is the loss of all preferences and settings in Silverfast. Hopefully they have improved that aspect.
Initially I chose Silverfast Ai over Vuescan because it seemed Silverfast had more features and a better GUI. After now using Vuescan for more than a year I think it has all the features I really need, especially in combination
with a color test chart and slides from coloraid.com, and Noise Ninja for grain reduction.

Thanks for your replies.

I believe that silverfast rewrote the nikon drivers. Nikon does not support osx leopard which is why I'm looking at Silverfast AI Studio.

Here's the reply from Silverfast re: compatibility.

I'm most probably going to be purchasing the software.

Dear msheppler,

we just released SilverFast 6.6 which makes Nikon Scanners work without problems on Leopard and Intel Macs.
We also added enhanced KodaChrome handling and implemented our iSRD to give you more controll over the hardware based
dust and scratch removal.
