simplifying a leica? remove lugs and such

"This seems to be more about aesthetics than functionality or actually taking pictures."

Sometimes aesthetics and functionality overlap. I've been thinking about taking off the self timer lever of my M3 for a while now. I think it would look smoother, but it would also keep it out of the way of my fingers.

some people here are being a little too over critical. if its something that he feels will enhance his shooting experience then who are we to judge him? the question was "who should i talk about this with?"

speaking from experience, doing simple mods can make shooting so much more pleasant.. its not about reselling or having a pretty camera it's about having a tool that you are comfortable using. and yes, to the person who commented somewhere above, your camera is a tool not an accessory you wear to show off.

Its your camera go for it!
But the argument about it being a tool I can't agree with, taking the strap lugs off is strange to me as I just don't see any reason to use a camera without a strap unless you are in a studio and the camera is always on a tripod. All those mods are about aesthetics which is fine if that what you like, I compare it to de-badging your car which can look very nice!

I took the "tool" reference when people started talkin about "resale value"

I just don't like to use a strap on the leica as it always add some bulk where I keep my hand and it always pokes me in my eye/gets in front of the viewfinder. Just having it in the hand and walking around is my usual style. Even on my 5d and hasselblad i work without a strap. Almost never in the studio but alot on the mountains and streets since I mainly shoot snowboarding and snowboarders

I've been using a homemade wrist strap on the left side, i'll try and get a pic of it. Been working best so far

I think its pretty hilarious personally that people here actually seem to take offence to the notion. (though some seem to be hiding well, behind their responses) its quite literally just a camera. it is just a tool in practical use, but its also a personal possession nd we all to one extent or another have a desire to personalise our belonging, wether that personalisation be for aesthetics only or for making it more practical and useful as a tool, we nearly all do. its a rare bird that has absolutely no care what so ever for making a change of some kind to our personal tools and belongings and just feels as though ts best to ‘leave things as they are’ a rare bird indeed. so what if its a leica, so what if the mods don’t seem to have any practical purpose or any purpose that you all feel is justifiable in some way. I say, if it makes you happy, do it.

just to lay my cards on the table, I have done similar, though I admit it wasn’t on a leica, just my humble spotmatic. I changed the leatherette to genuine leather, I swapped the strap for a much higher quality, hand made leather one. I swapped the film type reminder dial and the shutter speed dial out for those from an older model, for no there reason that I preferred the style of lettering used on older earlier models. now I’m thinking of gutting an SP500 for the front plate without self timer and swapping it onto mine, for no other reason than I think the camera looks better without it and I never use it. some would say ‘just ignore it if ou don’t use it.’ but why not? it won’t help my photography, and it won’t hurt it either.

they are our personal items, leica or otherwise we should all feel fee to customise and change them as we see fit. I don’t think there is any need for justification for any modification. personally, and I don’t mean to offend anyone when I say this, but I think anyone concerned with resale value of your camera(s) likely don’t use them enough or at all and probably seem them as something other than a camera.

As has been stated before, even the Leica factory has modified their own offerings.

They still have the 'ala carte' program. Script on the top plate? No red dot? What kind of covering do you prefer? Which frameline set? What viewfinder mag?

How many people on RFF have swapped the plastic tipped wind levers on M4s for M3 style wind levers?

I have painted many Leicas for people and included special features for them.

This is nothing new. 🙂 No reason for criticism. 😉

Well we have this in the classifieds right now, no uproar in the comments section there?

To answer the original question, I'd say DAG, Sherry or Gerry Smith at Kindermann Canada would be able to advise you on what would be involved. I'd start with Gerry, he is generally the quickest of these three and is usually game for most anything.

haha. I must admit that it's a bit hilarious that people take offense in that I want to remove things that I have not used once in over four years of everyday use and instead tell me to buy a cellphone camera or remove the film from the camera aswell.

can anyone tell me a good reason to:

keep the strap lugs when I don't use a strap?
keep the frameline lever selector when I just use one lens?
keep the iso-dial when I never use it?

A leica is just a camera like a canon or nikon, it's just a tool. Alot of people seems to think that they're magical though

I agree. Make the Leica into your Leica. It will be beautiful and a Leica still. Unless you're a collector intent on maintaining originality, or worried about resale value, there's nothing wrong with doing these things at all.

I've customized cars, motorcycles, computers, cameras ... you name it ... to suit MY needs best. Used to be known as "someone who would hop up a watch." I see no reason not to, unless I'm intent on maintaining resale value. I'm usually much more intent on improving functionality and aesthetics to please myself. 🙂

I'd say have it however you like. Take it apart, take the self timer and preview mechs out, grind off the lugs, fill all the holes and recover. I'd take the synch contacts out too. Braize some brass in, fill all engravings and repaint black. It's not that big a job.
Oh and is it possible to stop calling CAMERAS 'just tools' ? This isn't directed at the OP but at everyone who does it.
Is it done to make users of this term seem more professional? or a vain attempt at down playing the importance of the camera to you on a status or ownership level.
'tools' are what I use to fix my car or the house for @@@@@ sake!
Rant over 😉
Enjoy your modding

Personally, I am happy to have lugs. But, taste is personal.

I like Vlad's M2's ....

Don't we have an RFF member who created quite a stir about two years ago when he had the meter removed by DAG from an MP?

If you own the camera, my feeling is, you should do what you want with it, short of putting it in a trash compactor. Have fun. Life is short. Ignore all the folks who are giving you a hard time and enjoy the company of all the other folks who have a sense of humor.
