Simplifying lifestyle - which photo forums to follow?

Joe, Lightstalkers is still offline right now but here's a general description of the site
off google.

"Discussion board, contacts list, list of resources, populated mostly by international photographers, with some editors, writers, and agents.
Lightstalkers is a networking tool designed for mobile journalists."

Actually it has over 7000+ members and although its seems to have a core group of regular contributors who are are mainly photojournalists, it has many other media based members. It's very easy to browse the members' pages and individual networking lists are publically displayed making it easier to see who's who.
It has a very good resources section. A lot of editors source this site for quick contact with photographers for assignments and it's excellent for HU re international competitions and photo festivals.

A lot of Magnum photogs and Magnum nominees also frequent the site, as do many other pro photogs, even some of name (like the recently discussed Maki Kawakita).

Not to sound meanspirited in any way but honestly....seeking advice on what forums you should read and ignore? There seems to be a disturbing, increasing trend where people are asking for more and more 'decisions' and 'advice' on things that SHOULD be personal and subjective decisions.

Actually... I totally agree with you. Nothing mean-spirited in what you wrote! This is the very issue that brought up the question.

Many of the other forums are less lively than this, each seems to have it's own personality and interests and each has it's share of curmudgeons. I, too, am getting a bit fed up with the number of "what should I do; what should I buy; I just want to talk" postings... yet the sites where this doesn't happen tend to be kinda' dry.

It is interesting, however, to hear other's opinions on what they think of this and other forums. Perhaps I should have been more direct... but at the moment I guess "I just wanted to talk".

Please note that this is the first (and probably last) time I will ask such a question.

🙂 🙂 Apparently, you rather NOT be doing research, writing, etc., because...

this seems like what you'd really rather be doing! 🙂 🙂

(snip)

I think Joe has the best suggestion.

🙂
Actually, you're right, and you're wrong. For me it's more of a time-management issue. I work a full-time job (as do most of us, I presume), have a family that includes small children, maintain a home, and take care of three aging parents. Research/writing takes time and concentration, just some aspects of photography. I've adapted photography to fit my lifestyle -- kids, kids doing cute things, kids playing sports, kids at school/church events. Any other kind of photography happens on an occasional (but much enjoyed) basis. I can't squeeze the research/writing into small time slots quite as easy as I can squeeze forum reading in between life's multitude of activities.

So, now that I've explained (made excuses) for myself... I have to conclude that you are correct. Maybe I should ignor any advise offered except Joe's!

By asking such a question here I would guess you will need all the help you can get, therefore subscribe to more. By regularly reading all of them I should think any open question in your life can be answered.
