I've got a question for anyone who has dealt with Dr Yao. I've mailed him regarding payment methods and he say he accepts bank drafts and wire transfers. He recommends bank drafts. Anyone have any idea how do i send a bank draft in HKD to him? And what are the charges involved? I have both a posb and ocbc account. Thanks.

I suppose you could get one of the local post offices to do up an international bank draft for you. They allow you to pay in foreign currencies. But the IBD will have a nominal charge though, less than $10, plus you will need to pay for the envelope and if you choose, registered/priority mail. So the total could end up to be more than expected.

At least thats what happened to me when I bought my Canon from the G'man.

Hope that helps! :)

Woo! Passing out from BMT in two weeks! :D

For those in the medical profession, any suggestions on dealing with bilateral ankle laxity? ;)

When I buy from Dr. Yao, I made a Demand Draft from POSB in HKD and the administrative charge is $10. You could make a draft at POSB by phone and collect later at the branch of your choice without queing at the draft counter. The number is at the POSB website. :)

That depends on the severity of your problem. Do you have frequent sprains? Any history of torn ankle ligaments? If not, most likely the MO will ask you to wear ankle supports. It is very difficult to get down graded nowadays. :D

Thanks Peter. The MO said that it was possible that I could have been born with it, as I've not had any serious sprains before. He's referred me to MMI; wonder what'll happen next.

I think they will ask you the same questions I have asked. But does your problem causes any difficulty in military training? I have the same problem with my ankles and it is not severe enough to get down graded! :p

Hmm, okay. I'm not sure how severe it is from a medical viewpoint, but I can't run more than a couple of minutes without feeling pain, or march in boots either. For the moment, the MO's issued me with painkillers to be taken before marching or running, some muscle rub, and he recommended physiotherapy too. Painkillers don't seem to work though.

I wouldn't mind going to SAFTI...as admin staff. Heehee. :)

Sounds like we have a case to work on here! May I suggest that you make it sound as bad as it is but no malingering please! You could exaggerate an existing problem but it is impossible if not dangerous to make one out of thin air! :p

Yes, treading that thin line is rather worrying. I figure they can't fault me as long as I stick to the facts. Thanks for the advice Peter!

On another note, has anyone here (Singapore) bought the new Zeiss Ikon body yet? ;)

Actually painkillers may be bad in your case. Pain is your body's natural response to damage. Using painkillers to mask the pain might just make you incur more damage to your own body.

NS is not a natural situation, there is little respect for time needed for body healing. Pain killers are a way to cope, not the solution.

Justin,

multi-directional ligamentous laxity is a fair common problem...(I share your pain)
But unless there is some complication, e.g. dislocation (even that the down grade is only temporary... like I said, I share your pain...) the common advise is to take care to strap your ankles before exercises that require turning, stop and go actions.

Also there is good evidence from physiotherapy that strengthening the ankles will help with the pain and the laxity. there are simple exercises that you can do, things like balancing on one leg, using a balancing board...etc

Hi guys, it's been quite quiet around here eh?

anyway just wanted to really thank Peter for his GREAT recommendation on the XP2 film...

It's really great man.... just been to another trip with this film and this is the best c41 process bnw film i've used. Thanks again Peter!

Hi bja,

Glad that you like XP2! I must repeat this again, it is an absolutely fantastic film for B&W shooters that do not do self developing. By the way, you are most welcomed! :)

Regards,
Peter

XP2 is great, nice contrast if shot at ISO 250 and great latitude. Easy to scan too. Used to shoot with it a lot quite a while back before I do my own BW processing. Kodak's C41 BW has greater speed though and slightly finer grain. But don't have the more "traditional" look of XP2.

Prompts me to go get a few rolls and shoot it again.

Is Ruby still the cheapest source of XP2? What is the price now?

Hey guys, I'm looking for a Yashica Electro 35 GSN if anyone is selling or anyone knows someone who is interested in selling theirs.

I want to buy it in full working condition. This is to facilitate the trip overseas later this month on the 16th, hope to get it by then. :)

I'm headed there too on the 17th. Too bad we aren't able to meet, but I'm also interested in checking out their rangefinder or 2nd hand shops too. :)

John, interested in my GSN? Drop me some email. I'll be around till this Friday. You saw it the last time iirc. You can have it cheap for $30.
