When I got my Epson R-D1 it was the first digital camera I really liked. However, one thing that I did not like was that it is so big and small size was what attracted me to rangefinders in the first place. So I made some photos for comparison: the Epson R-D1, the Leica M8, the M6 and a Nikon FE2 SLR. The R-D1 is even bigger than a Nikon SLR. So that was one of the reasons for me to sell the R-D1 and get a M8.

Size is deceiving.

Looking at the cameras from the front, the M8/9 are smaller. But from the top, not so much: the R-D1 is 42mm thick including the thumb hump. The M8/9 is 39mm+, the Nikon is far thicker because of the 40mm mirror box alone.

Re-skinning the R-D1 without the hump [CameraLeather] reduces the thickness a lot. The M8/9 is a fat brick no matter what.

In any case, all three fits in my favourate camera bag...now let's look at weight...

I got into RF because I thought my FE2 was big and heavy.

Ha, I bought an FE2 because it's an RD-1 sized slr! I love the FE2, there's something about it's ergonomics and look that speaks to me. I don't use it much these days, but every once in a while I just take it out to hold it. It's a sickness :)

Ditto with my R4s. Same size as the R-D1 more or less, quiet shutter noise, large & bright viewfinder, give me a digital R4 please.
