I handled one in a shop the other day. The built is ok, better than I expected but far from the M8.
As for size, while the M8 does look bigger, the G1 reaches almost the same height and length at its max points meanwhile the M8 is thinner. So in terms of portability (coat pocket), I believe the M8 is better, even more with the slow lenses.

Well, I complained about the size of the thing, not being as small as it could be. Even so, it's about as small as my Hexar AF, so I should not complain.
I'll be waiting to see how that fast 20mm works out, and what other lenses may be available. It's going to be hard to get excited about a bunch of slow zooms.

Its going to sell for about $800 without a lens and if someone makes an M adapter that will mean its a small fraction of a M 8 cost. I posted some pictures on the Photo.net Olympus forum I found, test shots full rez in Jpeg. It looked good.
I personally would like in camera image stabilization, so I am hoping Olympus will do that when their own macro 4/3 camera comes out.
The reports are that the 1.4mp panasonic HD EVR is large 100% view and the pixels are so small you cannot see the separate dot inside the viewfinder.
This is any way you look at it a step forward for those who are not among the rich 20,000 who own M8's.
Its also a way to eliminate dealing with parallex, hard to see brightframes and external VF for wide angle lenses wider than 28mm. We can even go to long lenses without needing a visoflex.

Wouldn't lenses designed for it be better than adapted on Leica M lenses?

Even better, I was going to look at the 7-14mm that is going to be shipped next year to cover the wide end since even my 21mm lens is effectively a 42mm lens.
If I can get that lens I have the following coverage.
14-24mm, 28-90mm, 42mm, 50mm, 70mm, 100mm and 180mm. That would be quite good. I figure that a camera that has 10mp is enough for me since with up rez software like Genuine Fractals I can print without problems 3 times the size without a downside.
If we can get real clear noise free iso 1600 we can push it with noise control software like noise ninja to take most indoors shots without flash handheld as long as we have a F2.0 lens.
Even better results if the camera has image stabilization on board since none of our legacy M mount lenses need in lens electronics to benefit from the in camera stabilization.
F2.0 lens + no mirror vibrating + clean iso 1600 + in camera image stabilization = Images in low light

Rogue I felt the same way as you until I looked into it.
My lenses start with 21mm f4 my slowest lens so I would need an adapter for each lens and then since the format is a 2x crop it means I really only need to replace my slowest lens with a zoom that equates to a 14-28mm thats fine with me.
My fast lenses cover portrait 70mm and 100mm at F2. Thats great.
My 50mm is my Zeiss 25mm Biogon its F2.8 which should do wide open.
I hope Olympus does an in camera IS then I get 3 stops more hand hold stops, that makes my 90 f2.8 into a small 180mm.
I also don't need another format only a camera to fit M lenses on before film becomes really outmoded.
