Slag it out

How's the fence Frank? 😀

This fence is a real pain in the butt!

For myself, film floats my boat, so I"m really not on the fence. Like politics and religion, I think it's pretty pointless to try to convince others into your way of thinking.

Ouch!

I'm not in deep need of a fight, but an intense dicusssion of some of these issues could be interesting, since some of us are planning to spend some big bucks on an M8 and some of us are on the fence. It's an important decision, so why not have it out right now: what are the **real** objections and strengths of the two systems?

And I'd really like to have it out with the full-frame people. What's so holy about the old 35mm frame size? I simultaneously had Nikon 35mm film and 1.5 crop digital cameras, and a full-frame Nikon mount digital camera, and just lookin gfrom one print to the next, the 1.5 was the one I liked best.

To say nothing about the arguments about DR and post-processing. Film has to be post-processed -- that's why you have an enlarger.

We could even declare these discusssions to be Bill-Amnesty zones, so he could take the gaffer tape off his mouth and say anything he pleased. We could even make it a word-amnesty zone, so anybody could say whatever the *#@&* anybody wants.

Just an idea, but an exceptionally good one, I think.

JC

By the way, I didn't understand the comment above about Jorge and the Malvinas. What's that about?

It's a reference to some of the conversation in the World Cup thread. I don't know, I come here to escape the thing and it's the most popular thread! I know, I know - I'm a Killjoy!

Who prefers the new Bill "Peacenik" Mattocks to the old Bill "Cut You to the Quick" Mattocks?

I prefer the original myself. If he keeps this up for much longer I'll be growing a beard and wearing sandals - man.

Its about time that tape came off IMHO. You can start on me if you like. I haven't had anyone curse at me all day and the only argument I've had is with a planning officer who says that my new DG windows are too chunky - don't you just love officialdom :bang:

I can only come at these questions from my personal experience, so here goes.

Film vs. digital (economics of, obsolescence rate of)
My dSLR dates back to 2000. Still works, still produces good pictures. I don't usually print larger than 8x10 so I don't really desire (or need) a bucket more megapixels.

John Camp said:
Film vs. digital (resolution of, DR of, high-ISO of)
Slow slide film still wins the resolution wars, as do films for DR and high-ISO. However, in many cases, digital is good enough. Horses for courses.

John Camp said:
Full-frame vs. crop sensors
This is one for the physicists. A large sensor screams for a redesign to the 35mm body and lenses. There's great debate about vignetting on the Canon 5D due to light falloff at the edge of its "full frame" sensor. Also, a lot of older lenses (designed for film) simply don't perform well in digital. The best sensor size is the one that optimizes performance.

John Camp said:
Mechanical vs. electronic
This is a personal choice thing and also governed by availability of power. Ability to run on AA cells was a requirement when I was shopping for a dSLR ... it's hard to find anywhere you can't get fresh AA power if needed (and since digital requires electronic it all comes down to picking your power source with digicams).

I am new here and pretty surprised. I was told this is a forum where a lot people use use film and digital parallel, so where comes that "versus" from ? Which air needs cleaning here ? Is there a latent conflict ? 😕

About the above issues it is all said, a thousand times already, and I think we have all made our personal decisions of what we like or not. With all respect, but this kinda "discussions" would be just stiring up emotions for nothing IMHO.
I've seen enuff of this stuff elsewhere. Ends in flames always, because one or two lose control.

I have been informed that there have been complaints made about me - I have used profanity and have slandered another RFF member, apparently. I do not think I can 'keep the tape on' indefinitely, because that is not essentially who I am. Sooner or later, I'll curse. Or I'll tell say something snarky that will make someone upset with me. Or I'll hijack someone's pet thread. And the moderators will get hammered with complaints about me. They don't need that, and frankly, neither do I.

I am who I am. I wish 'who I am' was more compatible with what RFF has become, but it isn't. I have no complaints about RFF - I never have. I wish RFF nothing but the best.

So this is Member #6 signing off. I said I'd never make a big announcement, but I guess in the end I felt the need to say goodbye.

To those I've insulted, offended, hurt, or otherwise abused, I meant every word. Not that I intended to cause hurt feelings; but rather that most things I say are heartfelt and honest from my point of view.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Bill, I'm hoping things will look different in the morning and you'll have a change of heart about this!

Me too... I don't post here much, but have been reading you guy's posts for over a year now & hate to see people go for good... If there was a poll (could you stand it?) about ranking authors most read by members, I'd definitely be voting for the 'old guard' who have taught me much... For what its worth Bill I hope to see you here again...

Regards,

Peter

I've been thinking this for a while, but it never seemed apropriate. But now I guess I 'll say it. Yes Bill can be snarky. I'm sure he's a cranky curmudgeon, but he's our cranky curmudgeon and he's not without his charm. That said... there are people on RFF who seem to try to irritate him. I know I'd sure be a lot crankier if I had people specifically out to get me.

For a brief while I had two cats. They fought constantly. To the outside observer it looked like the big tom was the instigator, but he was a big lazy goofball. His littermate, my own beloved high strung calico (with all the calico temperment) - would tease him. And it would escalate, and escalate until SHE got hurt. Time after time. This lasted until they tried to burn the house down. I probably got rid of the wrong cat, but she was mine first, and I was able to find him the perfect home - a lady who worked for the state took him home. (A perfect match for a big lazy goofball if you ask me 🙂
