Slide film processing

where are you guys getting your E6 film processed? the only local developers are charging over $8 for a 36 shot roll

I've got a mix of Kodak and Fuji slide film.. I can get Fuji mailers for about $5 a piece, and Kodak's are over $7.. so the question is, can I send Kodak film in the Fuji mailers? or is there another source I should check out?

Have you considered A&I? Mailers from BH are about $6.79 or so each. That's more than your Fuji prices, but I've had good success with them.

It's always worth a quick "visit" to the B&H and Adorama websites to check on their "daily specials". I've gotten Kodak mailers at under $5/per that way. When such specials are available you have to "bulk up" to make the S&H pay - and it's always helpful to have some other GAS pain that needs to be addressed to really make it economical - but they do run these specials fairly frequently.

See also my second comment on the "Kodak thread" elsewhere here. I really do think that "mailers" are the last best hope for the survival of film.

Brett, I'll second A & I. I've used them for years with no problems. You can buy mailers at their web site, www.aandi.com

I was going to recommend Happy D Labs.. but they no longer do slide film, only print film. Their parent company, Dwayne's Photo develops E-6 at about the prices you quote...

Time to start hunting for mailers. My lab is closing its doors in December. 🙁

I would have mentioned Burne.com here in Madison, but they charge 35mm prices that are just as bad. Fortunately for me, they charge for E6 & C41 4x5 a price that is a quarter lower per sheet than does A&I so I save on the base price and not having to pay postage... Now I just actually need to make a slide shot _worth_ $5.50 (film+processing)... Foo 🙁

Although I very seldom shoot E6 film, we've got a great indie lab that does same day E6 for, IIRC, $6 and change for 24 and $8 and change for 36.

That's right about what Duane's charges for Kodachrome, less postage of course.

IIRC Duane's does E6 for the same price as Kodachrome.

well that's the big question.. I thought I read online somewhere that you can put any brand of E6 film in those mailers and they'll develop it.. it's not like the lab should really care if you used Fuji or Kodak film.. they're making their money on the developing, not the film sales

I've got a roll of Ektachrome that was a test roll from a few months ago.. maybe I'll drop that into a Fuji mailer and see what happens

I'll vote for A&I as well. I usually buy the mailers from B&H. I also use a local lab if I need something the next day...they are a bit more expensive, but you pay for service.
For me Kodachrome via Kodak takes about 2 weeks--but I love Kodachrome--so I endure.

Uh, what lab do you send to? Kodachrome processing by Kodak?

I thought the only lab here in the states that still did Kodachrome was Duane's in Kansas.

This might sound a tad daft but have you considered doing the E6 dev yourself?

OK it's more troublesome than B&W because of the higher temperature and more steps. I bought a couple of small water heaters with thermostats on them, it took a while to calibrate them to reach exactly 38 degrees using the kitchen sink full of water but you only need to do that once. Just leave the chemistry bottles in the water bath for about one hour and all is set.

The chemistry is reusable and works out a lot cheaper than posting here in the UK. I only mount the keepers though or don't mount any if you scan and not project.

The advantage is are that you don't have the risk of getting lost in the mail.

it might be frustrating for you joe, since you are not within a reasonable distance from me, but i have 120-format slide film developed for 2.20 euro per roll. uncut, unmounted, though. same price would be a 135 roll but i've never used that.
there are four places in the town which still accept slides for developing - three of them sends these further, however, and the fourth one is a bit more expensive.

c-41 dev and print is however way too expensive - 15 euro for dev and proof prints of a 36-frame colour neg. not to talk about black and white...at least the double, unless it's colour printed on a frontier.

by the way 2, the kodak e100SW slightly-expired slide films i've got from a rff member in trade for filters, were excellent!!! i'm really considering to use more slide from now on... also the one and only velvia (also 120-format) i got from another rff member, came out pretty cool - i was afraid of the oversaturated weird stuff i usually see from velvia shots scanned and shown on the 'net (photo.net e.g.) but it's nowhere that bad! I admit, there are no sunset shots between these🙂

Simply use the Fuji envelopes at a Fuji kiosk in Walmart and MARK THE ENVELOPES CLEARLY... "SEND OUT ONLY". The film then goes to Fuji, Walmart ships and receives, and if Fuji doesn't do the E6, they send it (likely to Duanes). Takes about a week and a half and is very inexpensive.

Don't waste time asking Walmart employees about this tactic. They have NO CLUE!!! Waste of your time and ties up a minimum wage employee.
