Have you tried Vuescan?? Can recommend it, It has made my Canon FS4000 far more versatile, and was the only option when I changed to Vista. Canon has not seen fit to provide an updated driver even though the scanner is only three years old!!

The scanner I used is a Nikon Coolscan V ED with the standard program supplied by Nikon. The film used is Velvia 100. I don't remember which lens I used, but it's either a Summicron 35 mm or an Elmar 50/2.8 (old version from the early 1960's).
I'm not familiar with Vuescan, so this is maybe a silly question, but is it a better choice than the Nikon software?

you will have to ask a Coolscan owner that one, certainly better for me as with the Canon and vista, I had no choice.
and it is more versatile than the Canon sofware. I had a Minolta before, their software was far better than Canon's Filmget which is slow and frankly a pain in the ass!!

I would suggest application of unsharp mask filter (to taste, in moderation) as the picture attached seems to be rather soft. I am not sure if I can tell what have you focused on; was it the silhouette in the foreground?
Personally, I am ready to give up on slide scanning as in my personal experience, resulting electronic files are just a mediocre approximation of what I was able to see on the light table or on the wall/screen. This is especially true for high-contrast scenes.
Black and white or color negatives scan fine in my humble personal opinion.
