How much of a problem is slight hazing on performance and what are the performance losses that may occur from it? Is cleaning possible, if it isn't too bad, and what would be the sort of costs involved in cleaning haze? We are assuming that it is slight and not heavy by the way.

Thanks for that link. Reading on the KB site gave me the impression that it would soften the lens for sure, but me being a visual monkey, seeing the effects, makes it easier to understand.

The image is still pretty sharp, but the tone reproduction/contrast get screwed up really easily. If it gets bad enough, sharpness will suffer, but bad tones come first. Only an experienced person will recognise slight haze problems because you have nothing to compare it with.

Older glass makes really nice pics, but it has to be clean inside.

Personally, I would have an older/old lens cleaned if you want to use it as a prime. 40-50
years is a long time and any haze will degrade the image. Re-lubing will make it smoother to use too. IMHO, you cannot really judge a lens unless it is clean.
