I have a 1939 IIIb and wondered what the two slots are for either side of the rangefinder/viewfinder frame are for? It still has the original metal one rather than the more recent plastic type. It looks as if the slots are for some type of attachment. Any ideas?

Diopters, if I'm not mistaken.

Yes indeed. Unfortunately these useful accessories are in the same class of rarity as honest politicians.

I think on the LeicaWiki page there is a scan of some text from 1936 that stipulated that one had to include a copy their optician's prescription when ordering these.
"Thanks, but I'll just wear my glasses..."
- said most everyone who saw that.

I believe DAG camera has a few of these diopter holders for the IIIg - I am not sure if they fit the IIIb eyepiece though.

All except one of my IIIc cameras have the same VF/RF frame with the cut-outs for the diopters as my IIIb. I'm sure some of the later models were equiped with these frames as well.

Both my IIIc cameras, 387599 and 502718, have them too.
