We just got a new set of bathroom scales. Very nice one too. It has options like being polite about your weight and allowing discounts for the day after a wedding feast etc. [nah, just wishing
]
Any weigh, I was passing by with my camera bag after a lens clean session and decided to see what it weighed.
I was surprised... I thought it weighed much more than it actually did.
Here's what makes up my 34LB or 15.4 KG of the EOS system in a Domke F2 bag...
eos 5D without EBGB whatever battery pack
3 spare batts
RRS L plate
memcards
Nikkor 20mm f3.5
EF 35mm f1.4
EF 85mm f1.8
EF 135mm f2
EF 70-200mm f2.8
2 hoya rubbers, 7 filters & stepups
cleaning gear
anglefinder
remote release
bits of neoprene packing, biro
nb I use other bags for the strobe and tripod gear

Wow, 15 kilos is quite a lot... I have to put my bag with the rb67 with prism, mags, pola, etc on the scale, its superheavy (but not 15 ki's...) and it is a pain to carry around...
So that's why i like my RFs ... no bag, no weight...

WOW. I am glad I am a medium-format shooter.

Yeah! My bag with the RB67 and all the rest is about 6 kilos...
Who needs more than one lens anyway??

One lens does not deliver nearly enough self-inflicted pain and torment. No way. Thats why EOS sys has a whole range of glass.
Imagine if I added a pro sports action lens like the 300 f2.8...

You didn't specify.. 85mm 1.8 or 1.2? 70-200 4.0 or 2.8 ??
Still, 34LB HUH? WOW I thought it would be less than that. Comparing it to a 25LB weight plate, I wouldn't think those things would add to be more than that..

Carzee,
Mine was packed with different stuff, but weight about the same when I started to "Right Size" to RFs. I've gone back to a small SLR kit as I find some stuff missing from my RF space, but I still am nowhere near that back bending bag of years ago.

Hi Carzee,
Perhaps due to language shortcommings or lack of humour, or whatever, I don't follow you. What are you talking about ?
a) The 15kg shoulder package is your daily or customary walking gear
b) All SLR gear you have weights 15kg if put together
c) Domke bags can include 15kg of photographic gear
d) Kindly suggest me a good back or trecking bag.
Cheers,
Ruben

I'm not surprised at the weight. 5 lenses that are not lightweights probably make it close to 10kg just by themselves.
Not surprisingly, the #1 complaint I hear about cameras like the 350D/400D or similar cameras from Nikon or Pentax, is that they're _too_light_, "toylike" is the phrase I hear often.
Of course, in the SLR threads around here, what's the 2 top SLRs? Nikon F series and Oly OM's. Opposite ends of the spectrum for size & weight.

larger than 35mm
This made me check my (d)slr gear. D80, flash, 2 small primes and filters are together just below 2kg. Compared to my leica with 35/50 it´s not that much more.
Hmm, if I would use a fast zoom instead I wouldn´t save weight. Even the lightest 17-50 around - from Tamron - is heavier than the 2 primes. The modern slr-gear is everything but light. Conclusion ? Ask yourself if you need all that heavy stuff.

I wonder if our old bathroom scales will even register the weight of my newly acquired digital SLR with single zoom lens and flash gun.
