Hi!

Coming from the DSLR world, I start appreciating my small rangefinder setup more and more, especially for travelling.

I currently happily own a Bessa R with the Ultron 1.7 35 and the Canon LSM 1.4 50. I am looking for a 75mm lens to complement this kit. I read many good things about the Color-Heliar 75mm, but looking at it in the shop, it is a tad big for my taste.

Would you know about good 75mm alternatives in screw mount, early Leica, canon, nikon, ...? It would be for head and shoulder portraits, mainly.

Thank you very much for your time.

I don't think you are going to find any smaller. I am thinking of all the 85mm options, but believe they are all larger than the CV 75. Remember, the size of the CV's hood adds to the appearance of the lens. Is it too big for your taste if you remove the hood and just use a snap on lens cap?

hmm, it that case it is not so much bigger than the ultron 35, right. That could do
the job.
But the hood is not there for nothing, right? Is the Color-Heliar 75 subject to flare? Any experience?

It is a great lens. Keep in mind that all lenses should be used with a hood, so you should replace the hood when you are ready to shoot. This is the same situation with other lenses too, CV just incorporates the lens hood into the finished product. I would guess that the CV lens is less subject to flare being that it has modern coatings and all than a 1950s vintage 85mm lens. I never shot mine without the hood, so I don't know how it performs without it.

there is one of the old crazy 73mm leica lens on eb*y right now I think has like $250 on it ....If I rember right they are great soft portrait lenses...

You could opt for a collapsible rubber hood instead of the stock metal one--if you buy a model made for normal/telephoto lenses, it would give you the same protection as the V/C hood, without the added bulk in your bag. Check out bhphotovideo.com and you can peruse the various rubber hoods available.

Cheers
