where can i find a small flash for my rd1 at a reasonable cost?

don't see anything on ebay, no response to my add here at rff.
i'm thinking along the lines of a sunpak 1600a...

any help greatly appreciated.

Just out of curiosity and because its annoying me, under your user name where it normally says moderator, I see some letters and some undisplayable characters which show as little squares. Are you using some unusual font or character encoding?

the sunpak pf20xd would be fine with all cameras. And its got a wider range of control than the contax tla200. But it doesn't talk to the camera except taking instruction to fire and ignoring preflash on some digi cameras. You either set it manually or use its own thyristor metering.
The question is really what you want it for. manual fill or full flash and is a GN of 20 enough for your needs and is the level of automation enough. If you want it to link with camera TTL or OTF it won't.

I have a TLA200. I don't understand how that flash would work with a non-Contax camera.

In manual. All cameras will fire a flash from the hot shoe. But it will only work with TTL on a contax. It will work fine if set manually but you have to know what to set it to.

I think that I should have been more specific.

It is less functional than a flash that can be set manually and has a few auto settings using an external sensor. I only use on camera direct flash as a fill flash and being able to select a few apertures just makes things much more flexible vs. being bound to one aperture for a given distance.

Maybe one of these?

These have been around for a while, I've seen them long before they started being branded "Holga", I think the one I used to own was "Nissin" maybe?
Or this:

Is "small" your main requirement?

(Edited to fix my mistake in posting the links.)

small is more for fitting into the camera bag. don't need power...i'm thinking about some shots of people at night but up close with my 21 on the rd1.

"up close with my 21 on the rd1."

You will need a flash that handles 28mm or live with the vignetting.

The small Metz flashes in the gn20 range go cheap and have vertical bounce + they usually work good on auto.

btw, Gilden inspired?

it's the word moderator but upside down.

Ah I just sussed it. It is being displayed using Verdana font which is a not a unicode font and doesn't have those characters. If I uninstall Verdana it displays using Arial which is a unicode font and the next available installed font on my machine and it displays as you intended.

VBulletin uses "verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif" fonts in that order for that particular piece of code.

Most everyone on Windows will have Verdana installed so won't see it displayed as you intended. You could change the def of 'smallfont' class to put Arial first and then everyone will see it properly.

Maybe its not for you but the PF20XD is designed for 28mm lenses and up. However, it has a built in diffusser which takes a stop of the brightness and that will spread the light wider than a 28mm lens.

on manual?

I used one, TLA2000, on my M6 a while back just to see what it was like. You have to study the guide numbers for a second and then it makes sense. Of course, it is manual only.

Now, I would like a flash in its size to fit my M8. I want it to cover a 21mm or so when the light goes down and I "need" it. I don't really like to use things like this but it is a nice backup. I have my noctilux for true low light. :D

I like the Guilden reference. 285HV and cord all the way...Right?
