There must be a messenger bag with a sleeve in front for a laptop? All of them seem to have a laptop compartment in the rear which would stiffen the bag against your back as opposed to a contour. Looking for a small bag to accomodate an XT1 w/16-55 and an 11 inch Macbook Air.

Why don't you flip the bag so the inside wall is facing out? If it's a flap-free top-loading bag, it shouldn't matter which side faces your body.

Hmm, maybe either the Domke herald or the older style F803/J803 if you don't mind having minimal (see just the canvas itself) padding?

I would go the sae way, with something like a Domke Sat 700 , camera insert and laptop in a padded sleeve. Very light and versatile.

I own a Think Tank Retrospective 10 and it fits my iPad easily in the front compartment and I expect it to fit an 11" laptop in there easily. But it will be oversized. The Retrospective 7 is supposed to fit an Apple MacBook Air 11" in the back pocket, that means that it will also fit it in the front pocket.
