Smaller 50mm lens for Canon P

Canon RF bodies are rather heavy and as such suffer from heavy lenses like Canon 50mm f/1.2 or the early chrome versions of 50mm f/1.8

Heavy compared to what? I Just weighed a Leica M2 (580 gr) Canon P (580 gr), Canon VI-L (582 gr) and Canon 7sZ (623 gr). 😀

Anyway, another recommendation for the Canon 50/1.8.

I've had both the 'panda' Canon f1.8 and the Color-Skopar f2.5. I much preferred the Skopar as it's more compact and quicker to focus; I also prefer the results.

I have a Canon P, had the Nokton 50/1.5, and now use an M-Rokkor 40/2. Not a 50, but it sure is compact. I miss the Nokton, but you're right, it's a big 'un.

What a mistake! Mounting the Rokkor might prove a challenge. :bang:
Indeed, I just purchased a 50/1.8 Canon myself.

Finding a undamaged Summitar is a lot harder than finding an undamaged Canon 50/1.8. Very soft front glass, and if coated, the coating is extremely soft, trivial to accidentally "clean" the coating off the Summitar. The Canon has hard glass and hard coating.

That said, the Summitar is a lens with wonderful character.

Smaller but denser is the Canon 50/1.5, but quite unlikely to find for $300 these days.

Size can be a bugger on an RF body. You might look at the Nikkor 50/2 in LTM. I believe that many early Canons had them mounted on them. If you would like something a bit newer what at the 50/2.5 and 50/2 options from CV? I think the question really comes down to how much speed do you need vs how small do you want.

The 50/2.5 is about the same size at the 35/2.5 (look here http://www.cameraquest.com/voigtlenchart.htm ). Nothing to pull out, nothing sticking out, it's a great pocket 50. The 50/2 is a bit bigger but still much smaller than your 50/1.5.

I'd go with the Nikkor myself, but then I love them. I have yet to find a CV lens I was not happy with so it's an easy call on that side for me too.

Could you share some of your observations between the two? Characteristics of the lens? Anything you liked in the Skopar over the Canon?

I have the Canon and have shot w/ the Skopar 50. The Skopar is slightly smaller than the Canon 50/1.8, and I like the way the lens handled. The shots I got from the Skopar were sharp, but otherwise nothing special. If anything, my (admittedly brief) experience w/ the Skopar reinforced for me how good the Canon is.
