Smallest 50

I don't think the collapsible I-22 (and maybe the I-50) will fit on an M series without modification. The infinity lock is obstructed by the lens release button.

industar i-22 or i-50, possibly easier to find and with harder coatings.

ok

ok

thanks for the clarification. they fit and work well on the CL, but get very close to the innards when collapsed.

I know this is about 50mm lenses. I can say the J-8 is pretty compact, the I22/50 collapsible are excellent. I had to have a LTM-M adapter machined to make it work well on my M*.

there are all good choices mentioned here... that said, the 40mm summicron-c is really small as is the summaron 35/3.5 if you fee like going wider, i know the M3 doesn't support those framelines but a very tight adherance to the 50mm framlines would be fine.

As others have said, a 50/3.5 Elmar would probably be the smallest and most compact.

Stephen Gandy's Cameraquest site has some pictures of an Elmar 50/3.5 on an M6.

http://www.cameraquest.com/mcom.htm

The current Elmar 50/2.8 is pretty compact though, is threaded for filters, and has click stops for the aperture settings. To me, it is a friendlier lens to use.

One element you haven't mentioned is speed. Are you looking for smallest with speed (1.4 to 2.0)? Or with modest speed (2.8) ? Or just plain smallest (above 2.8)?

Smallest fast 50mm, I'd recommend the Canon 50/1.5 ... length at about 33mm. It is tiny compared to all other 1.4/1.5 lenses and is still considerably smaller than most 50mm crons of any version.

Smallest fast 40mm, I'd recommend 40 summicron-c or 40 rokkor-m. Then the CV 40/1.4, which is a tad larger in profile than the above.

No 1.4/1.5 50mm is smaller than the Canon 50/1.5 ltm. The old summilux and new summilux-asph are giants compared to it.

Fits and works on my MP just fine.

I'm close to picking one of those up. It does seem small for the speed.

If you require full sharpness, and contrast without "correction" qt wide open you'll want to go with a Konica 35 / Nikkor W design.
