I don't travel often , but have been invited from Uk to Malaysia.
I guess digital SLR cameras have to travel as cabin luggage , so kit has to be limited .

I reckon a camera bag for a single DSLR and extra lens , Sony A35 and A390 , 35 f1.8 . Minolta 35-70 [ my favourite 42-105 equivalent ] and the pair of kit zooms would suit .
Plus the Fuji XF1 'notebook' - though I would love to afford a Lumix 100 !!

I love the colours of the A390 and as an ex SRT user , the minimal facilities don't bother me !
Plenty of SD cards as downloading will have to wait for return .

Just one camera in the bag , plus others carefully placed in the cabin luggage .
Is this how to do it ?

Thanks

cabin luggage is safe, just it's weight is limited, possibly to 7 kg. An additional small shoulder or waist bag, resp. camera pouch usually is accepted.
I admit that, against usual advice, often, must have been for over 50 flights, I also put quite a number of photografica, above all old manual lenses, into checked in luggage. That only because my notebook, cameras and most valuable lenses already weigh 7 kg but I carry quite a few more lenses. So far nothing ever got lost nor damaged.

If I was you I'd take one wider lens, specially if you plan to take photos in Kuala Lumpur

have a good trip!

I don't quite follow - are you planning on taking the A35 and A390? If I were you I'd take one or the other, unless you're going for months and months and really need backups (I hate travelling with extra 'stuff')... Keep in mind that every mall in KL (and there's a lot of malls in KL) has a handful of electronics/camera stores where you can pick up a new body if something fails.

I'd second the above recommendation and suggest taking a wider lens. I travel to Malaysia a couple of times a year and the majority of my shots end up being with a 28mm (on film). Street photography in KL especially responds well to wider lenses.

I'd also add in your IIIc, because black and white film is awesome fun in the KL backstreets.

On a completely unrelated note, eat as much as you can, food in Malaysia is amazing 🙂

How long are you in Malaysia?

Recently I traveled with my DSLR (A900) with appropriate lenses for the trip and a smaller Sony E-mount camera as back-up camera. I carry those on in a camerabag, that is my carry on. I sometimes have a smaller bag in my check-in baggage. On the ground, I rearrange my stuff so that it fits my trips.

You decide if you need both the A35 and A390. I don't think its too much for anything over a few days.

Thanks .

I shall take the advise to place the kit lenses 18-35 and 55-200 in the hold luggage .

The A35 is fine for low light use , but I prefer the A290 SLR viewfinder for general use whereby ISO 100 is adequate , especially as I love the colours from this cheap and cheerful camera !
The a290 with 35mm f 1.8 just seems to fit my hands perfectly , as does the Panasonic L1 with Olympus kit lens .

I have a Samsung NX1000 with 24mm f2.8 equivalent lens which I will probably also pack in the hold luggage - it's quite compact without the zoom and gives that wider view for street scenes .
