Sneaky (cat!)

This is my parents' cat, Precious. Precious HATES me. She used to love me, but several years ago, before I took in Sneaky, I started taking leftover meat to my parents' dog. Precious won't eat table scraps, but she LOATHES the dog and got mad every time she caught me feeding the dog. Eventually, she stopped forgiving my constant cheating/betrayal.

I have not given the dog anything in the last three years because I have been giving my meat to my cat, Sneaky. Precious still hates me.

I asked her a few months ago if she was ever going to forgive me. My mom answered for her: "Nope. You are DEAD to her."

{In the posting above, we read that our protagonist, Christophorus, has betrayed the family cat.}

Yes, your mom is correct. To the cat, this is betrayal on a Shakespearean level. The cat is saying, “Et tu, Christophore?”

Prime difference between Cats and Dogs. Do something that is offensive to them and a Dog will forgive you the instant you stop, a Cat will make you pay enduringly.

Sneaky spent most of today sleeping in the top platform of his indoor cat tree. When he finally woke up, I got a photo of His Excellency majestically looking over his kingdom. When he realized I was photographing him, he jumped down and demanded food.

Is Sneaky very vocal? My friend’s cat is extremely vocal and has an amazing repertoire of sounds - trills, chirrups, meows, brrrt’s, mmrrrhh’s, and so on. When I’m talking on the phone, I can hear the cat in the background seeming to join the conversation.

My last cat, a 10-year old shelter rescue cat, purred for me when I met him at the shelter, so that was a good sign.

The first year I had him, he never meowed at all. Just purred. He later began trilling all the time. I would talk to him "Sneaky, want food?" and he'd respond with a loud trill. Lately he has become very vocal with loud meows when he wants something, or to respond to things I say.

Sneaky was sitting on the counter looking out the window yesterday afternoon. Too cold to go out and patrol his territory; thankfully, he has an indoor observation post.

Our cat never made a sound (other than a howl before coughing up a hairball) for the first eight years of her life. Now at eleven, she's quite talkative, and eager to have "conversations" with us. She's also become unafraid of strangers, and much more affectionate. It's amazing to see an animal's personality change and grow over time!
We have a theory that she watched and learned from Willie, an ageing and sickly stray we took in about 5 years ago. Willie had to be euthanized after two years, but was the most loving, affectionate creature one could imagine, always in our laps and eager to meet and love every stranger she encountered. My theory is that Nancy, our present cat, watched and learned. She clearly mourned Willie when she was gone.

Last night, we grilled steaks, and Sneaky got some. I put all the leftovers on his plate, which was enough for him to eat, plus some to save for later. He ate about half of it, then went outside for about 45 minutes. I forgot to put the rest of the meat in the fridge, and when he came back in, he gobbled up the rest. Now, he's mad that there's no more steak!

How this contrasts with Sneaky's life Before Crawford!

Indeed, he chose his new family well.

(And it would appear his new family is the happier for it.)

Its amazing to see how he's changed in the time he's been here, which has been a little more than three years. This photo was made soon after I first encountered him. He's skinny and scraggly looking and one of his eyes is hurting (he had an infection; this was right before I took him to the vet the first time).

And here he is now, much bigger and healthier looking. Both photos were made in the winter, when his fur should have been at its floofiest, but in the earlier photo he wasn't healthy enough for his fur to be fully fluffed out.
