I was wondering how long it would take for an enterprising entrepreneur to replicate the hard to find and outrageously expensive Leica SNHOO adapter ring. It allows E39 filters to be fitted to the 50mm Summitar lens which normally requires vintage odd shaped filters, specific to the Summitar. I just ordered one and hope the threads are the proper pitch.



Do a search on eBay for SNHOO.
 
Let me get this clear again.
I just ordered one.

So when it arrives, I ll need to screw the adapter onto my summitar. And also screw a E39 filter onto the adapter. Right?
 
Alrite!~ Yes. Made my payment. Keeping my fingers crossed .Hopefully the package arrives safely. Had a bad experience when a package didnt arrive and the seller put a bad remark on my ebay feedback.
 
I've received the adapter from heavystar today. The E39 filters work well, however the adapter does not screw all the way into Summitar filter mount and doesn't allow me to use the 12585 hood or E39 lens cap. Is it normal for this thing?
I wrote to heavystar as well but they are on a vacation until Feb 28.

There are no more SNHOOs around than there ever were, and the price of the real thing is the result of supply and demand, i.e. 'outrageous' is completely the wrong word. But if you want an adapter to use, they're not hard to duplicate, at least well enough to work, though thread pitches, etc., may not be a perfect match.

The Heavystar adapter screws into the lens leaving about a 1mm space between the adapter ring and lens front. This fit is just like the real SNHOO, which I also have. My 12585 hood fits over my Heavystar adapter with mounted 39mm filter, and clips into place on the lens with no problem. My 12585 hood also reverse fits over the lens, adapter & filter with the matching Leica 14033 slotted plastic cap in place on the hood, (lens extended).

It's true that a metal E39 lens cap is not deep enough to extend over the mounted filter and adapter to reach the lens barrel. This is the case with the real SNHOO as well. Aftermarket pinch 39mm lens caps are available on eBay which will fit into the front of a 39mm filter.

I don't know why your 12585 hood does not fit. What seems to be obstructing it? If it's the Heavystar adapter, there must be variation in the samples. As I said, my 12585 hood fits on the lens with the Heavystar adapter and 39mm filter in place, both in the forward and reverse positions, (lens extended).

Thank you for your suggestion of the cap. As for the hood, I have read in another thread that there are 3 versions of the Summitar with 3 versions of the front rim of the lens. One version has no groove, one has a narrow v-groove, and another has a wider square-bottom groove on the lens nose. The clip-on 12585 hood for the Summicron fits best on the last type. My earlier version doesn't take the 12585 hood, with or without SNHOO.

That's right. I had forgotten about the hood mounting groove variations of the Summitar. Some years ago, I purchased one of those huge folding SOOPD lens hoods and I had to be careful that it had the proper shape spring clips to fit on my lens. My Summitar, (SN 913132), has the flat bottomed groove for mounting hoods. There is also a clamp-on version of the SOOPD hood for the Summitar with no groove. All potentially very confusing. Thank goodness for the Internet.
