I am not a fan of the lens it comes with though

I am looking at fitting the olympus pancake 17mm lens to the front of it but they are currently retailing at £300...which I cannot presently afford.

Can anyone suggest an alternative for the time being?
 
Congrats on the G1. I love mine; it's the most usable camera I've ever owned, just the right mix of ergonomics, image quality, handling, etc.

As for the kit lens, I find myself most often using the 14mm f.l. I think it displays pretty good image quality (considering the s/w correction) and flare control is pretty good. Not using the tulip-shaped lens hood, if you can get away with it, reduces the size of the kit just a bit more.

But I do have a Jinfinance Minolta MD adapter on order, for my old MD glass.

For candid street photos I find myself reverting to MF focus mode and zone/manually prefocusing for a target distance; then snapping quick grab shots is utterly quick. I usually use the EVF, but occasionally the LCD gets a workout, depending on the need. I can also emulate the EP1 by folding the LCD flat! ;)

That's the thing I like about the G1: it's flexible, you can convert it from one usage mode to another.

Congrats on the G1, if in doubt it is most likely the most productive camera in the m4/3 genre. But I like the 14-45mm, its a pretty good quality lens IMO, the only thing that makes it 'kit' is the speed. Its better quality and far faster to focus on the G1 than the 17mm Olympus.

Enjoy your G1! It's been my #1 most used camera the last few months, even making my M8 gather a bit of dust at times. It has some very interesting technology behind it, enjoy!

If you want something as wide as the 17, you won't have a lot of choices. In something closer to "normal", an OM 24/2.8 or even one of the 28s (3.5 or 2.8) are all very good lenses. Anything wider is likely to be nearly as pricey as the ZD 17.

Panasonic have just announced their own pancake lens, no prices available at the moment. Olympus also do a 25mm pancake at a lot less than £300 which I am investigating at the moment

The Pany 20/1.7 is available for preorder at a cost of $399 US.
 
If you find it for 200 pounds, let me know, I will jump on that price. Given pricing trends It will probably be 400 pounds. Although I've noticed that Panasonic stuff seems to be a good conversion of the USD price.

I was working on the USD conversion (silly I know when it comes to G1 lenses!) If panasonic have got any sense they'll pitch the price of this one at a reasonable level and within everyones reach! They seem to be responding to users pricing gripes though, firstly the £50 lens discount and now the £10 battery discount. We G1 users live in hope!!!
 
I agree with the other posters. The G1 is a great camera and has left my other cameras on the shelf. The kit lens is excellent quality, albeit a bit slow. I really like the f4 7mm-14mm ultra-wide, but it is only available from Japan for now.

The existing alternatives, either demand the money you don't want to pay, or are less practical, like the those Trius has offered.

Nevertheless, never say never. Perhaps you could try to come to terms with carrying the camera with its kit zoom ? I myself bought an inexpensive hand strap ot the type that attach from the camera ear to the bottom screw, and carry the camera with me everywhere, everytime.

It is easy as the camera is light weight. It is practical, as you are ready to shoot from morning to night.

I like this quote from the Amazon ad copy (emphasis mine):

"Product Description
The Panasonic H-H020 large-diameter F1.7/20mm (35mm camera equivalent) fixed focus lens produces bright photos with a dramatic soft focus even in dimly lit locations..."

It's a shame they don't know the difference between "fixed focal length" and "fixed focus".

And what's the deal with "...20mm (35mm camera equivalent)..." when it should be a 40mm equivalent, if they're trying to talk about equivalent angle of view.

Oh well; at $400, I may yet decide to bite.

kent: interesting. i have an M8 and have pondered a micro 4/3s as a backup. was that your intent? and now you're using it more than the M8! why? please share your experiences.
