So, does spending money obtained from a camera sale constitute as a trade?
Deep sigh, .... only 4 days and thinking of jumping off the wagon.
No, I did not buy the M4P for $475 in the classifieds. Someone else deserves that one (and considering that I just rebuilt an M4P that was a partially complete parts camera).
But have my eye on a mint Crown Graphic with two cams that I want. The sensible person in me says that I should just learn to make cams.

Euhm, no.
It's a sale and a purchase.
You can do it, Vick!

It counts. What happens when your sell comes up 10, 20, 30 dollars short of your buy? Happens to me all the time and it's a slow money drain - I never actually break even but always tell myself that I do.

Sorry to put you through that
I have a Speed Graphic I could've worked out a trade on...an old one, doesn't have cams. Would be a good tripod camera.

If you have too many cameras then forget it. My Supergraph bought about $30, I make lens boards and pick up lenses for $100, DIY ahs lot of fun.

Ha ha, I'd be happy if it was that. Previous times it would be several hundreds short, along the lines of sell a lens cap, buy a Leica.

I think you should learn to make a cam for your 150 Apo and write a tutorial.
Then… I can copy you for my 150 Apo that sits on my monorail rather than my crown where I want to use it
Oh and yes, it is GAS to sell something and buys something else. Not even kind of a trade, Maybe a consolidation of assets but, not a trade

Ah yeah, from reading the Graflex site, making a cam is a bit "trial and error".
Or back in the day when it was considered craftsmanship, "file and polish it until it works".
But, if I'm filing a cam, I'm not on the internet shopping for gear that I vowed I wouldn't buy.

Only if you spend it on your wife (shoes, roses, etc.)

So, a camera-to-camera transaction is a trade, and a camera-to-cash transaction is a sale? Look up "medium of exchange." Of course, I'm mostly single, so what do I know?

You sound like a drunk in denial. Own up to your GAS addiction and get what you want. Life is too short to beat yourself up over this kind of thing...

Yes. Of course it does. If not, i'm in a lot of trouble with myself.
Scenario 1:
I have Camera X and a friend has Camera Y. I want Y; he wants X. You swap. Done.
Scenario 2:
I have Camera Y and don't happen to know anyone with Camera X. I sell Camera Y and buy Camera X.
What's the difference?
I submit: the second deal must be concluded within 45 days of the first.

My wife called it a trade and was perfectly happy when I traded, sold, some R equipment and purchased a 75 APO which I like a whole lot better than the 75 Lux that went.
The five R lenses that I kept are wearing Nikon mounts now seeing as how Leica decided not to make a digital reflex except for the unaffordable S2 system with limited lenses.

the first step is admitting one has a problem.
so, just don't admit it.
I'd rather read posts about what you bought, than posts about wagons and guilt
