Stephanie, Polarizers are a REAL PAIN on a 35mm RF. You will need to index mark the one you get, and carry a separate one that is also index marked. Use the hand-held one to orient the filter the way you want and then set the one on the camera. You are best off to find a Series VI adapter for the camera and go with those.

Hmmm...maybe I should. I'm willing to take suggestions.

Steph, you'll like the P more with every additional pic you take. I went up the cog railway to Mt Washington last weekend, and took my P with the 35/2. I also had my 7s with 50/1.2 that never came out of the bag. I'm fond of the 7s, it's a great shooter, but the P does have a better feel, at least in my hands.Stephanie Brim said:I'm not a big flash person anyway (the lighting thing or the program, to be honest), so I prefer fast lenses. I'd be in heaven if CV would make the 35/1.2 in LSM. I'd also like to find the Canon 50/1.2 eventually if I decide this is the camera for me.![]()
Sometime down the road, think about acquiring the "Canon Dream", a 7 with the HEAVY 50/0.95. Now, that's fast, in fact it's still the fastest ever made, I think.
While some people give it terrible marks for sharpness/contrast, most will tell you it's not bad. And noone uses it stopped down. If you need the speed, you absorb the weight. If you can get by with less, carry one of the alternatives, which are sharper and lighter.
Anyway, for now, concentrate on taking a big variety of things with the P, and you'll see what most of us here love about the camera.

I do... okay, for this picture I didn't stop it down much (about f/1.1 or f/1.2) but I've certainly used it at more moderate apertures. Otherwise, whaddaya gonna do -- change to another 50 if the light improves?!

Shocking but true: At least in my crude, informal "tests," the 50/0.95 is sharper at f/5.6 than the 50/1.4 at the same aperture!
Unfortunately, stopping it down doesn't make it any smaller, or lighter, or make it obstruct less of the viewfinder. But as Harry says, if ya need it (or just like it) ya live with the consequences...

Doesn't everybody carry more than one 50 with them???
Seriously, the pic is a great example of the type that can be captured with the 0.95. And, I believe the test results at f/5.6. This isn't a cheap chunk of glass. Remember how many of these were used by the TV industry, back then and maybe even now.
My main point is the one you acknowledge... it doesn't get lighter, or intrude less on the viewfinder when stopped down. Wide open, or close, I like the quality it gives to scenes like the shot of the dancers. Thanks for sharing.

Judging from my development of the negs from yesterday, the lens I *have* on the camera is good enough. Before I go about getting another 50 for the thing (if it ends up completely mine down the road) I'll want to get that elusive 35/1.8. =P

Stephanie Brim said:Also, out of curiosity, what filter size does the 50/1.8 take? I'd like to get a yellow filter and a polarizer, but I don't know what size to get.![]()
Steph - here's the other approach to filters. Canon made a Series VI hood for the 50/1.8, which acts as a holder for the Series VI filters - the filters are not threaded but just sit in the holder which is screwed to the base of the hood on one side, and onto the lens on the other side.
I gather that other makers used the Series idea too, so the filters were widely available and adapters were made for quite a few cameras and lenses.
And the "P" makes it look good, too.

Damn,...I've bid on the P+50/1.4 I mentioned here previously. :bang:
I've seen that another RFF'er (furcafe) also did...so i waited until sbody else outbid him.
Furcafe, are you still watchin'it / interested in it?

At the beginning again.
Not to hijack or anything, but maybe we should have an RFF thread where we disclose out ebay names such that we aren't always bidding against each other? Or maybe it will inspire even higher bids...?

I've checked out on the 40mm filters but sadly, the shop doesn't carry them. I'll look around a bit more since i scour different 2nd hand shops pretty often. Will let you know again.

Well-known
40mm.
40mm.
I've ordered a 40mm yellow and a 40mm B+H UV for my 35 f2 Canon.
The yellow is some sort of off-brand, I'll make a report and provide the source (they also sell 40mm Skylite 1A) when I see it, later this week. Probably a rip-off at $30.
The UV is a B+H, "new old stock." I really got taken: $50.
A B+H that's mounted in a 40.5mm adapter, with an integral w/a rubber hood (I think this was for a Contax G)...I'm hoping to modify ito fit 40mm... relatively readily available, I'll post the source when I find it.
ALSO, various Series 6/42mm (outside dia of Canon lens) adapters and a *Leica* Series 6 UV filter... I'll sell that stuff.
I just "won" a vented (see-thru) clamp-on hood that MAY work with
35mm ...If it vignettes I MAY have it shortened (machine shop).
