So I picked up a bottle of HC-110...

I stopped into my FLCS to pick up some Reala for this weekend and grabbed some more reloading cassettes as well. Then I finally gave in and picked up the bottle of HC-110 that I'd been eyeing for awhile.

Got home and went to put it in my closet next to my jugs of Diafine. Only I discovered that the Diafine A had eaten through the accordion bottles I had stored it in. Big mess and no Diafine developing till I can buy some more... :bang: :bang: :bang:

Time to learn a new developer for sure  Anyone got times for Plus-X at EI400 (my usual Diafine combo ... ) ? ;)

Haha, that happened to me with Diafine. The next time you mix it up, put it in some SERIOUSLY heavy duty plastic jugs...like the gallon Serve & Saver ones by Rubbermaid. Should prevent that from happening again.

As to the HC-110...I've been interested, but I still have too much Rodinal right now to go buy a bottle. ;)

That's almost a 2 stop push. You could start w/ 1:64 (Dil. H, an "unofficial" dilution) at about 14 min. I've never had good results with Plus-X, so this is coming from a "guestimation".

Used to keep our Diafine in brown glass jugs for that very reason. Have to be a little more careful handling the glass, is all.

Oh, I don't expect to push it like I would with Diafine but I did find a time for EI250 at Digitialtruth so I'll probably try that as well as box speed and see how things go.

I'm thinking that when I get my next gallon kit, I'll go over to one of the Brewpubs here in town and buy 4 empty half gallon jugs that they use for take home brew. And maybe one full one that can be washed afterwards for fixer ... ;)

William: I see, I thought maybe you had film that was already exposed @ 400. Massive Dev only has times for Dilution B. Not a good choice, in my experience.

Experimenting with development by shooting a roll, cutting it, and developing it at a few different times may be the best answer here. You have to find what works for you and the only way to really do that is to experiment. Never be afraid to experiment a bit with developing...sometimes results can be a pleasant surprise.

OK, I know I have a weird sense of humor. But I was amused at thinking which the full one was to fix; film after use or you during use. :D

Towards that end, I spooled out 5 12 exposure rolls last night to take up north this weekend. I'll try different EIs & devloping times. Reading a couple of sites, I'm thinking of using Dilution H just to have a little longer times to work with.

Yeah...I prefer slightly longer times unless I'm working with Diafine.

Also, where do you buy your bulk Plus-X? I'd like to get a roll eventually as well.

if you insist to push plus-x, try d76 or xtol first before hc-110.

plus-x is a great film at its box rating speed but imo, it does not push well.

I got my roll from my FLCS but I'll probably get a roll of Arista.Edu Ultra 100 next.

I guess I think of pushing it because I'm so used to using Diafine that it seems natural to rate it at that speed. No biggie, even at box it's still my favorite black & white emulsion. I'm only shifting to Foma because I just don't trust Kodak and don't care for the look I've gotten when I've tried Ilford products.

I thought about that right before I hit the Submit button but laughed and left it vauge... :D

I would say that rating it at 250 won't produce bad results...but I do wonder what it would look like in Rodinal if rated at that. I'll have to do the test quickly before October finally gets here. ;)

Never been overly happy with the edge effects and sharpness I get with HC-110. Good tones, but mushy looking sharpness. I much prefer Rodinal and D-76 1-1.

How was your Plus-X coming out at 400 in Diafine? Just started using Diafine for my night shots and contasty day shots with Acros and Tri-X and like it a lot. Got some bulk loaded Plus-X I'm thinking to give a try at 400 in Diafine. Any examples you can show me? Tips of usage, where it works and where it does not?

Thanks.

Richard
