So long... for 10 days!

So long, my dear fellows! 🙁 I'm off to Bogotá, Colombia, for a conference on Spanish American literature and a tiny little bit of R & R (what's that? how do you eat it? where can I get some?). My plane leaves at 2 PM, but I'll leave the house at 11 AM.

I shouldn't complain. They say Bogotá is a nice town but I'll fly really light this time: only one camera and probably four lenses (for sure my 50, my 90 and the two wide-angles... or maybe just one). I still have to check my film inventory, but I'm sure I have enough.

One of my very favorite poets... and you're right! He's from Bogotá. I'll see what I can do about seeing his home. Did you know he's still a polemical figure? Lots of stuff to talk about...

Traveling, and especially today, after the news this morning, makes me feel a bit sick. No, I'm not afraid of flying or planes, it's simply that I know I have to go through security and those fellows are going to be tense, very tense.

So, I'll do more or less what Joe said: one wide angle (the 35 is my very favorite), my 50 and my 90. And they'll go all snug and confy in a Lowepro AW3 bag. No B&W this time.

My sources say Bogotá is a great town if you like museums... Otherwise, the "garúa" (constant drizzle) keeps everything green.

Anybody ever been there?

Well... as some may have noticed, I'm back. And I brought eight rolls of film!

Only...

Anyway, Gabriel, I located and photographed the "Casa de Poesía Asunción Silva" just one block away from my hotel. How's that? Now, there were no effigies of the man, but I snapped a number of pics of the house and its interior. And, of course, the mandatory "atmosphere" pics! 🙂

Steph, I found no images of the man, but lots of Bolívar and other patriots.

One thing I should add... Bogotá has changed a lot. I stayed in a part of the downtown area (actually, South of the city area, but it's the downtown, nonetheless), full of colonial style houses and other buildings. Unlike, say, 10 years ago, it's a very safe city, and my wife and I saw students partying and singing at about 2 AM, women walking alone down the street (and they weren't "working", if you get my drift), and, in general, a very safe environment. Petty crime abounds, like it does in any big city, but the violence that put Bogotá in the headlines of many newspapers is gone. All in all, thanks to the Colombians' warmth and generosity, I had a pretty good time.

Besides, it was fairly cool. Temps in the mid 50s at night, and low 60s during the day. When I arrived in O'Hare I experienced a bit of a shock, despite wearing a t-shirt.
