of course! That was my biggest pet peeve about the M8, and now, with the M9, I can use cheaper, but still very nice UV filters. I couldn't be happier not having the UVIR filters attached to every lens.

I threw in 2 filters as a deal sweetener when I sold my M8, but otherwise I still have them. And I use them. The M9 is not totally effective in filtering out unwanted IR, not like my 5D. What Leica maintained about the M8 although it was a gross understatement (that in "certain" lighting "some black fabrics" display with a "slight" color cast) does now hold quite true for the M9. I rarely find I need the filters, but I keep one in my bag for those rare circumstances (or, if I'm going to be shooting a formal-dress party indoors, I outfit all the lenses I'm taking). Wide angle lenses need Cornerfix-ing BTW, as the M9 has no in-camera correction for the cyan drift from lens-fit IR filters.

I'm glad I kept my Hot Mirror filters from my Kodak DCS200 days...

52mm Hot Mirror on the 35/1.2 Nokton, 62mm Hot Mirror via step-up on the 50/1.1 Nokton, 46mm at $20.

Some are being dumped at great prices.

My best grab price on UV/IR filter: $5 for 49mm, $10 for 52mm.

So if one has uv/ir on all lenses with M8 and upgrades to M9. Is there any reason to even take off the filters? Meaning they'll also act as protective shields in place of the normal uv-filters. If there's no harm in using them under normal conditions and sometimes there's even benefit, I'd be inclined to keep them attached to all my lenses now that I have them.

On the M9 your corners get severe colour shift with wide angles if you leave the UV/IR cut filters on. There is no menu setting for them so the camera can't adjust accordingly and doesn't have software profiles to do so. I use the UV/IR filters in some circumstances when required (IR colour contamination) and when they won't make things worse (corner colour shift, flare) and not just with an M9 but with all digital cameras.
