So, Tell Me About Your LX3...

I use the manual focus a good bit, for what it's worth, and I do wish the camera would power up and remember those settings, whether by custom mode or otherwise. Shutter lag is greatly reduced if shooting in MF mode. Perhaps it should be renamed "auto-focus lag."
 
So, let me get this straight: When shooting straight JPEG, or RAW+JPEG, software compensation for WA barrel distortion kicks in for the JPEG files, but not RAW (which makes sense). Just how bad is the barrel distortion at the 24mm-equivalent setting (or at 35mm, for that matter), sans software-correction? The distortion at the widest setting (about 35-38mm equivalent) on my tiny Casio borders on awful; the Olympus, at 28mm, is much better, but hardly perfect. (That's what happens when your main 28mm "reference" is a Konica M-Hexanon...not the only great 28 I've ever owned, but possibly the best.)

I like mine a lot hate the raw support I only use iphoto so I may never get support. but as someone said jpegs are very good. Still learning with it settings and such but looks like it will fill my needs. I use the LCD at times and a Russian viewfinder too. Gonna get one from Cameraquet eventually.

It's quite dramatic. I made this page a while back when I was still thinking I wanted to shoot RAW with it:

But you can see how different the FOV is between the RAW and JPG. A lot of correction is going on.

I've stopped caring, though. The jpeg engine on this thing is really excellent. In fact, though Panasonic makes a big deal about the improved sensor, it's the internal software that's the real achievement. Its purple fringing correction is incredible--much better than I was able to achieve in Lightroom.

Again, I'm not looking for perfection here, just a more-usable digital formula than I've been dealing with. Compact digitals are always a compromise from one standpoint or another (not just digital: you should see the distortion at the 28mm setting on my Konica Lexio 70 p/s). I can probably deal.

(Just got off the phone with my niece and nephew in Florida...they're going to be at the inauguration, so of course I insisted that film be gotten for the Yashica T4 I got for the niece some time ago.) 🙂

My G9 does the same idiotic thing. If I turn it off and on, it wakes up at the "saved" 10-foot manual-focus setting; if it times out and turns itself off it wakes up focused at some random distance. And of course going to sleep can't be turned off...
Frustrating.

I sent one in as well and I'm crossing my fingers. Hope that they address this issue in a future fw update.

For whatever reason, they've left out this feature.
 
You would also think that there would be a menu item to have the camera focus at Hyperfocal Distance at any given f stop. This would be the sh*t.
Imagine, as you change fstop, the camera sets the distance automatically.....ahhhh

but a dream, ahhh to just dream......shooter

It's insulting to the buyers to not be able to turn off the sleep mode altogether. We're not all morons who can't handle this feature. Maybe we'll drain the battery faster than we think it's draining once or twice, but hey- give us credit for being able to learn after that...😉

I would check in the set up menu on your G9. The manual states that the auto power down can be turned off. I know that I can do that on my A590 IS. Also the manual states that you can save a manual focus location, i.e. distance, in the Custom settings on the Mode dial.

Try these and I hope that this makes your shooting easier.
 
What are you folks using to convert your .rw2 files?

I noticed that Silkypix, aside from the previously discussed automatic lens barrel distortion correction, is also performing an automatic levels adjustment. I emailed Silkypix support and they said it's spec'd into the software and cannot be disabled.

I see Adobe DNG Converter supports .rw2 files, but that the resulting .dng is 3x the side of the original RAW file due to conversion issues (supposed to be fixed at a later date). I'll probably go with this, but was curious to see what else is being used.

Hi,

I now use lightroom.You don't have to convert to dng files. You can leave the Panasonic raw files as they are.
But the jpg's out of the camera are so good that I can't do it better with raw in LR.

Try this - put in manual focus mode, then prefocus with the little button on the far right or with the joystick. The shutter lag is pretty short in MF mode, by far the shortest of any non-SLR digicam I've used.

I've been doing this and am pretty impressed with how little lag there is. And I love the DOF scale.

Not sure if people are using out of the camera jpegs or post processing but the black and whites like the one above ^^ look much nicer to my eyes than the ones I've seen posted with G1 which have that sorta plasticy digital look to a much greater degree.

Just an opinion.

With version 1.2:
- the EXIF data is correctly displayed on all JPEG files.
- improved white balance in flash mode when connected to the DMW-FL220 flash unit.
- shutter speed correctly set while the image stabilization is on in the IA and Scene mode.

My shot was taken in RAW then quickly processed in Lightroom 2.
