Don't dismiss the Bessas. They do all that the Leica does, trhe viewfinder is excellent and are good value for money

With the money you just saved pick up a used Weston Master V meter and a mess of film. If they're still making film when you retire you'll still be able to use the camera.

The M2 and a meter was my other choice. Though not with the Weston readings, sheesh. The only real thing being that I much prefer black cameras.

The Bessa's aren't really for me. I want a Leica, and it's either an M2 or an M6. I think I'll probably go with the M6, and a Zeiss 50.

As Roger says, there is a reason why they cost more and in terms of users', I think there is more to it than just red dots.

Dear Benjamin,

I bought my first Leica, a IIIa which I still have, at around your age, almost 40 years ago.

An M2 might not be a bad idea, as it's a lot cheaper and will force you to practice guessing exposures if you can't use the meter fast enough. Then buy an MP when you can afford it (insh'Allah not too far in the future -- I got my first M at about 24).

But equally, an M6 (not ttl with the backwards shutter speed dial) is nearly as good as an MP and a lot better than the M4-P I used for 24 years before getting the MP.

From what I understand Leica were to introduce a new RF similar to the CL/E for those wanting to get into the M system...

Leica appears to be fully dedicated to the movement into digital. There will be no new film cameras introduced (in fact the M7 production has ceased altogether) in the foreseeable future.

But with the introduction of the M8.2 (priced at $6,300) there is the option to purchase a pre-owned M8 at ~$2,500-3,000 (warranty extra with the purchase of a sapphire glass rear screen and/or a shutter upgrade).

Thank you for your kind advice. I shall probaly hold out a bit longer for the M6 classic. I tend to think that when laying out a somewhat considerable amout of money, it often makes sense to spend that bit more.

Certainly, when God wills it I shall have an MP, though I should hope that my work is strong enough to fund it when the time comes.

I'm already in the habit of estimating exposure prior to comfirmation from the meter in my FM2, as it seems to make sense to be ready and not spend time holding the camera to your eye until you need to.

I'm really quite excited about getting one. My father tells me I'm a fool, and perhaps he's right, though somethings are worth it.
