So, who's going to be first?

Oh..and I agree that the auto WB in incandescent lighting is much improved.

Yahoo!! C1 Pro seems to support the (new firmware) ERF files with no problem.

Sean, thanks for checking on C1. If anyone also uses silkypix, could you let us know if it is able to digest the s files. Much appreciated

Just got my two mistresses upgraded. Dead easy... well done Epson.

I have to say, the autofocus wasn't improved at all with the firmware upgrade :D

As Sean notes, C1 Pro works fine with the upgrade. I believe the underscore character leading the filename is the convention for naming raw files - that seems to be the case with my Canons.

IIRC it's shorthand for Adobe color space raw files

- oh, just noted this is old, sorry.

At last I have managed to do it!

An already great camera is now better in many ways, I expecially love the 16x magnificarion with RAW, the double shutter problem solved, ad the histogram view remembered (However I would have liked the Histogram on te quick view as well)

Overall 9.9 out of 10 for this firmware, well done Epson.

Good to see all those thumbs up for Epson,
after all the complaints we had to go thru the past few weeks.
Good weekend everybody and let's post those new made shots on Monday!

I've just been looking through some RAW conversions (ISO 1600, color) and the noise level does seem to be lower even in the RAW files. It looks like Epson, very wisely, went after just the chrominance noise because the files still hold good detail. To my mind, this was exactly the right approach.

As I look at more converted RAW files, I'm increasingly impressed with the effectiveness of the hot pixel reduction feature.

I've made all my test pictures (with the new firmware) at ISO 1600 so far (with NR set to it's lowest levels in C1) and they just plain look good. With just a slight saturation bump and a touch of color noise filtering (both during RAW conversion), I'd feel good sending them to clients just as they come from C1. The improvement in ISO 1600 color files is just enough now that I'll be willing to use that ISO with the R-D1 at weddings. Until now, I had limited color to ISO 800 and let B&W go to ISO 1600. Given how much I rely on these R-D1s, I'm really delighted with the firmware upgrades.

Cheers,

Sean

Raw files are recognised by idImager after the upgrade.

It seems that programs that will open R-D1 raw files but not R-D1s raw files have no problem with files from upgraded R-D1 cameras.

So, R-D1s raw files differ from upgraded R-D1 raw files in some minor way - an ID flag?

I've just checked the dead/hot pixel mapping - brilliant: previously, I had several clumps of nasty bright red pixels that I was always removing, but every one's gone!

Really pleased with this upgrade - kudos to Epson!

Has anyone tried to open files in Photoshop CS with the old verson of ACR after the upgrade? It would be nice if I didn't have to buy CS2 and the associated upgrade in ACR to use the new firmware.

I use CS, not CS2, & the latest version of the ACR plug-in for CS works fine w/the new RAW files (@ least in Adobe RGB color space; haven't tried sRGB).

Yes EPSON RAW Plug-In 1.0.1 for Mac still opens R-D1 raw files after updating the firmware.

Sure they are.
Thanks for your efforts, Sean. :)

Well, I just upgraded! And it still works. :)
Now I just have to get out and shoot with it.

Hi,

just saw that a upgrade was available and saw it only on this website, I really wonder what use it was to register the Camera, if they won't send any informations about that, ok, I got a nice Epson Plastic Card :D

As for the upgrade it works :)

Cheers

Thanks furcafe, great to hear! I didn't want to upgrade to CS2 if I didn't have to. A great camera just got better.

I think your observation is correct. My camera had a slightly disturbing red color cast at the top 5% of the frame noticeable only when photographing grayish cyan objects. It showed up under a very limited exposure range at ISO 800 and 1600. It was caused by noise in the red channel. The color cast is no longer visible since the firmware upgrade. In addition all the visible hot pixels, including the red cluster have mapped out. I'm very pleased :)

some bad news? I upgraded yesterday and everything works fine. However, had moderate use of the camera and had to replace to battery twice! never had to replace it, for such a level of use, even once. Anybody else had a similar experience?

btw, this hot pixel mapping- do you have to apply it on every single image? (doesn't sound right to me). I performed it once and then mistakenly took a picture with the lens cover on and had MANY hot pixels....

Did you have the power save timer set to 3mins before the firmware upgrade and now it's defaulted to 5mins after the upgrade?

Haven't used mine enough since the new firmware was installed to notice - I'll try it out over the weekend.

Bob.
