Is there a recommended soft shutter release for FSU cameras, or should I just buy one of those threaded screw in buttons?

One of these would be nice, if it works:

On the other hand, I saw a silver button with the Leica logo on it. Might be nice to sport that on a Fed-2. It would most likely improve performance several hundred percent.

I've found that the mini-soft release worked better on the Zorki 4 that I have - the normal one crowded the top deck too much.

On later Kievs, either the large or small softrelease worked fine - my preference was for the larger one. (My Kiev is a 1983 4am).

However, I'm not sure they fit on some of the older Kievs - the diameter of the threadmount are wider on one older Kiev that I have used. (1970's version 4a(b)). The softreleases were incompatible.

I don't use one on my Zorki 4 but I do use one on my Zorki 3 (just the mini screw in type) as the shutter release on the Z3 is lower and I could never find it. On the negative side I do seem to take more accidental shots with the mini release on. I can't feel any actual difference in the shutter release action.

Several of us RFF folks did a bulk order of Tom Abrahamson's(the ones that Cameraquest sells) Mini Soft Release a while back--I got three and use the two I have still on my Zorki 3m and the FED5. On the Z3m it doesn't make a huge difference but on the FEd it makes a noticeable difference in how slow a shutter speed I can hand-hold. And, since I got RED ones, they look pretty snazzy too!
