Sold my Zeiss Ikon and replace it with M6

How do I feel about it?

Regret . . . not total satisfaction.

Zeiss Ikon's viewfinder is simply the best!

It's huge - bright - so easy to focus.

But then I've never used a Leica before.

I think I will be getting another Zeiss Ikon again.
I think I will keep both.
They are really two diferent species.

I have not posted for here for several months already.
Been so buzy at work.
Will be posting more often from now on.

Why did you sell Ikon? Were you not happy with something? Did you think Leica would be better? I just wonder what were your reasons for a switch. I have never used Ikon, but do have an M6. I do wonder (as I was before I got M6) if I should try Ikon, yet M6 seems to do the job just fine.

Hi,

so do I.
A ZI can not replace a M6 like no M6 can replace a ZI in my opinion.
If I can afford I will buy a ZI-Body one day because of its own design and its physical and functional
characteristics.
My M6 is all-mechanical and the ZI is electronic. A nice addition - no replacement.

This I have now learn from experience.
As such, I am now on the same path as you are.

Except perhaps I might think about Bessa R4m for that extra wide finder.
But then I am a Zeiss guy.
Oh, I don't know.

I love it.

In fact I missed it.
Think I should not have sold it.

But then I had never used a Leica before.
I don't anyone's RF experience could be complete without using a Leica M.
Somewhere, somehow, along the line, need to know what a Leica really feels like.



Kind of like, if you r a DSLR guy, unless you have used a Nikon,
Some of their older lenses, you don't really have a minimum core of understanding for DSLRs.
Some people maybe fans of Canon, but would still need to understand what the other significant system offer.

Same with RFs, need to understanding both Zeiss and Leica.
I think that the minimum content of RF.

I think you really nailed this one, and I couldn't agree more.

At a certain point when my Bessa-T was away for repairs that would take much longer than I hoped for, I came to the conclusion that I just had to have a Leica M. From what I read (not only here by the way) about it I figured an M would trump any Bessa in build quality and handling. So, I got an M4, which according to many has to be considered the pinnacle of German uber-engineering. And while it's not bad (the viewfinder is even particularly nice), it doesn't stop me from liking the T much more.

In the end, I guess I'm glad I did get that M4. It not only cured me from Leicaitis, but made me value the handling of the Voigtlander even more..
 
Well, I had an opportunity to compare an M6 and an Ikon side by side and I decided
that the Ikon is a much better photographic tool for me. So I got an Ikon, silver, limited addition and I am sticking to it and I have no desire to get a Leica.

between my ZI and M3, I think if I had to make a Sophie's Choice, the ZI would be the one I would keep

the ironic part of the logic in my decision is that I would keep the ZI because it would be harder to replace.. even tho it's a current production camera.. but the M3 is almost always available for sale

The M6 is an old design when there was no competition to Leica. It's a good camera, well built, but if you really want to get the Leica experience, you need to go shoot an MP or M7 or one of the older M4, M3 or M2. The quality difference between these and the M6 is significant. My MP is an absolute rock compared to the M6s I used to shoot, and much more smooth. But I hear a lot of good things about those ZIs.
 
Get the Zeiss. Better viewfinder.I have bought 3 different M bodies and had to return each one with a problem. I guess it keeps the repair dept working though.
 
I agree some of us just need the Leica experience. I feel very fortunate that I got my Leica M2 forty years ago, still use it occasionally, and -having it- isulates me from any desire for another Leica. Desire for lenses is another matter! :D

I do prefer to take the Zeiss-Ikon out for photos; easier loading, AE, better VF (especially when picking 35 or 50mm lens)... Yet I think the Minolta CLE remains my favorite over the past 25 years (at least for 28 + 40mm lenses)

I have no great interest in selling the old M2, though, because it continues to protect me from M-GAS...
