Sold the G1 but....

I hung on to the M mount adapter. I still have hopes that Olympus will produce the little compact m4/3 camera sooner or later and when that day comes then I will give a second look at micro 4/3.

Frankly I am more hoping that Canon or Nikon will jump on the wagon instead, I would much rather buy a Canon EVIL camera then an Olympus.

In the end I did like the G1 for being a compact high image quality machine but I still thought it was too large for what I really wanted which was a replacement for my Ricoh GRD which after today looking at different compacts like the Panasonic LX3, Canon G10 (not compact!) and Nikon P6000 thing...that there is no replacement for a GRD in my book. So I will wait and see what the horizon have in store for us. A Sigma DP2? m4/3 compact Olympus? Who knows.

It will be very interesting to see what Olympus does, they've had quite a bit of time to watch Panasonic, and lots of time to set up teaser displays. 🙂 After displaying the mini concept at both Photokina and PMA they don't have much choice but to follow through with a production version.

Eventually we'll see EVIL versions from the big guns but my guess is it will be quite a while.

if you don't think the G10 with its retractable lens is compact, how would the OM4/3 with adapter and M-mount lens be any smaller?

it's really hard to believe no one except Sigma has tried to make a big sensor "relatively small P&S". maybe all their market research shows that it won't sell?

Out of interest - what put you off the LX3?
I'm currently considering one as a replacement to my GRD in the hope that it will solve the noise and RAW right-time issues.

Because DSLR quality would be an acceptable trade off for a little more size if the camera had its own pancake style lenses, m mount adapted lenses are just icing on the cake. If it turns out to be another boring 3.5-5.6 zoom like on the G1 then pass.

One of the things that I didnt like about the LX3 was the protruding lens barrel thing when the camera is off and the lens cap. If the camera is going to be small and compact I want to be able to stuff it into my back pocket, GRD can, LX3 is pushing it, especially with the cap or the ricoh self capping thing.


Really none of the current compacts float the boat so will hold off and see what happens a few months down the line.
