Some changes to the site

Joe,
If you or Jorge "make" the section and rename the existing one, I will go through the posts and move the relevant ones.

i think it's doable. it has less threads than the russian rf, or canon or leica sections.

I like the changes, but the link on the front page to the new darkroom/film/etc. forum doesn't work. I get the following error message: "Invalid Forum specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator."

What happened to the Optics Forum??? Loved going there to look at Raid's lens comparisons. I'm currently working on a long lens shootout (Nikon 105mm, Leica Summilux 75mm, Leica 90mm Elmarit M) and don't know where to post the results when I am done.

i liked it too but it really wasn't very popular. people seemed to prefer putting posts about lenses in the brand category. it was me who moved them into the optics forum. i think raid didn't like that too much.

I must say I liked the optics forum as well. If you are looking at the days posts, the forum doesn't really matter, they all come up in order. One of the big differences of RF is the interchangeability of lens makes.

If you are searching for a comparison between different 35 for instance, you now have to look through 6 forums (or 7 if you include the general discussion page which Raid favours). With the optics, it is only one. I know there are some that will only use Leica on Leica (or Canon on Canon😉 ) but many either don't mind mixing their glass or find it more cost effective.

Jorge,

Thanks for moving the off topic to the front page, appreciate it 🙂

I think you deserve credit for many good changes to the format of the new classifieds. I think in particular the new feedback system specific to sellers is a stellar change for instance, makes it easier for buyers.

Is there, however, any possibility to making the new classifieds (new format and all) free to all members? Again, not a change in the new format, but just making it free as it is on Photonet. Or is a return to free classifieds absolutely not a possibility at all in your mind?

If you let us know definitively, I think it will settle a lot of concerns, and I shall not raise the subject again. If it is possible to return to a free classified system, I along with many others, would appreciate it. RFF sponsors can still get their gold stars, and the added benefits of larger PM box and higher gallery uploads.

thanks for listening

regards

I don't know about others, but I just recently discovered the Optics forum myself. The lens comparisons were really quite interesting. And now they're gone....

The threads haven't gone but have been moved to the most suitable "brand" forum. I know what you mean though as you can see from my previous post.

I am with Tom on this one.
the old style " free" classifieds served for more than their purpose,
they really brought a sense of community to this forum.
a good anology is the open stall markets that are to be found in many european cities, usually at a certain time of the day, or the souks in the Levant.
these were are more than outdated medieval remenents, to be replaced with sterile supermarkets and far away shopping malls, they are exciting, convinient, alive places that more than meet the needs of the community. to lose them is a tragedy, a dent to the culture.
I do think a retro classifieds can co- exist with the " paying" classifieds.
the " free" classifieds had more bonding value to this community than appeared on the surface.

that is my two cents.

I'm 100% in agreement with Tom and xayraa33. Especially with the way xayraa33 described the benefits of the old classifieds. They provided an opportunity to do someone a favour, and to promote good will within the RFF community. I'd love to see the old classifieds come back for items less than $100, items for trade, and WTB.

I dont see the old classifieds coming back at the moment. The revenue it generates is actually helping with the runing of the site and software upgrades. Some of the ads in the new classifieds are free to all such as theWTT and WTB. Also, I am working on pulling the comments from the classifieds into a forum type thread so it resembles the old style.

I did some resarch and found that the way I have made things work here are very fair to all. Some sites dont allow you to view classifieds without being a paying member the same for gallery. Some sites charge a monthly fee just to upload 2 or 3 pictures per day. Some sites dont even letyou browse the forum without joining. Hope this answers your questions.
