Anybody else get confused when 3 of the same pictures show up in the 'recently uploaded' part of the gallery? I know its when people move upload photos under multiple galleries, but this just doesnt seem like the most elegant way to do it. When someone uploads a photo to their personal gallery, and 2 other galleries, which one are we supposed to comment on?

I agree, Einars. The best approach seems to be to load up one image into the Member's Gallery, let it pass through the front page, and then move it to a personal gallery sometime after that. Using the Member's Gallery first also allows others to see the technical data.

🙂

i was having some issues w/ uploading last night. i was kind of lost. i created several galleries to upload photos to. are they in the "personal gallery" or the "member's gallery", and what is the difference? ie: i just want to have photos avaialbe for people to look at. do they need to be in one place rather than another? if they are in my gallery, will no one find them? i don't have the galleries labeled as private or anything. is it more a matter of traffic? so i guess a better way to ask this is "where is the best place to upload photos for everyone to see on the forum?" sorry to jump in like this too!

Personal galleries allow you to organize your photos (type, camera, lens, etc.). If you use the Member's Gallery the images will still show up as your images. When someone clicks on the 'My Gallery' link in your signature, your Member's Gallery images show up along with your personal galleries (provided, of course, the link points to your RFF gallery).

For instance, I no longer have personal galleries, so when you click on my RFF link below, you'll see all my images (I only have one page worth of images), all placed in the Member's Gallery.

But if you click on graksi's gallery you'll see he has one Album (personal gallery), and a bunch of images sitting in the Member's Gallery.

Duplicates occur when you upload images and choose to upload to more than one gallery. If someone clicks on the Recent Uploads (to review what has been uploaded) the duplicates show up.

The problem with duplicates (besides the fact that they clog up the Recent Uploads) is, as Einars stated, if someone wants to comment on your image, which one do they comment on? Comments for your one image could end up spread across several duplicates.

Also, the Member's Gallery is the only gallery that I'm aware of, that has fields for technical specifications. It helps to show that you are in fact using an RF.

🙂

ok...thank you. most of the stuff i am currently trying to upload is just older stuff i have on my computer now. i don't have a scanner to put any of my newer stuff up, and on some of these i don't even remember what camera i used. besides that they are kind of crappy scans. in the future i'd like to rescan them, and scan in new stuff. but i digress.

would you say that one gets more traffic than the other? are people more likely to see the ones in the generic "member's gallery" than in your personal galleries? is the *only* benefit of the personal gallery that you can group like shots together? if so, it doesn't seem as if it is really necessary. i could just name the shots accordingly (to group them as a series).

thanks again for your help!

I'm with Ray in not having any personal galleries any more due to the lack of tech data fields. When I see multiples of the same image in the Recent Uploads, I usually will comment on the one that's in the members gallery (maybe in a specific topical category), not in the rate-my-photo or a personal gallery. When I see multiples in other ways, I'll comment on the copy with the most views and comments.

For my own uploads, I upload only to the member gallery, keeping it simple.

I get confused when my gallery has some one elses pics in it. It always does. But I can't rename the folder, delete it, anything.

I do think that making it so that only one image shows up would be a worthy change. Technical fields are also important. When I upload, I only do so to the members' gallery. At least, I think I do.
